Orioles designate Webb off 25-man roster

The Orioles made room for new reliever Andrew Miller today by designating Ryan Webb off the 25-man roster. This is the same move made with Evan Meek earlier this season. It's procedural. Webb remains in the organization and will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Teams don't put in claims for players DFA'd off the 25-man. It's not the same as being taken off the 40-man. Webb, 28, is 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA in 42 2/3 innings over 42 appearances with the Orioles this season. The Orioles signed him to a two-year, $4.5 million deal in December. Webb gave up a run in the 13th inning last night against the Angels that broke a scoreless tie. Miller, 29, was acquired from the Red Sox yesterday for Double-A Bowie left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. He's posted a 2.34 ERA in 42 1/3 innings this season, with 13 walks and 69 strikeouts in 50 appearances. Miller, who spoke at a press conference earlier today, has held left-handed hitters to a .150/.203/.217 line in 65 plate appearances, while keeping righties to a .180/.279/.258 line in 105 plate appearances. Since becoming a full-time reliever in 2012, Miller has registered a 2.78 ERA in 140 games and struck out 13.3 batters per nine innings.
