Orioles lose 8-3 but announce signing of Henderson (updated)

Jimmy Yacabonis walked the first batter he faced tonight and waited for the third.

Yacabonis stayed off the rubber as the ovation built for Manny Machado, the former Orioles All-Star and Platinum Glove winner making his return to Camden Yards. He understands and appreciates a moment, but he also won't surrender to it, getting a called third strike with a sweeping slider.

Machado had the final word, however, launching a 455-foot home run into the visiting bullpen on the first pitch thrown to him in the third. Yacabonis also understands and appreciates greatness when he faces it.

The Padres scored five runs off Yacabonis in 2 2/3 innings, Machado delivered an RBI single off Josh Rogers in the fourth and the Orioles lost again 8-3 before an announced crowd of 21,644.

Trey Mancini and Dwight Smith Jr. had RBIs within the first three innings and Richie Martin led off the seventh with a home run, but the Orioles fell to 22-57 overall and 9-29 at home. They've dropped 12 of their last 13 games and 16 of 19.

Orioles pitching surrendered four more home runs, including Fernando Tatis Jr.'s two-run shot off Yacabonis in the second, to increase its total to 160. The Padres offense ranked 14th in the majors with 112 before tonight.

At least the draft provided another nice distraction. Catcher Adley Rutschman, the first overall pick, was introduced to the crowd in the top of the fourth inning following this afternoon's press conference and batting practice session, and the Orioles later announced the signing of second-rounder Gunnar Henderson, the prep shortstop from Alabama.

Henderson will be introduced to the media Wednesday morning and also receive an in-game greeting.

The Orioles have signed 31 of their 41 selections. The deadline is July 12 at 5 p.m.

Fans stood to applaud Machado before his name was announced and the ovation grew louder as he saluted the home dugout and waved in each direction, making sure that he didn't exclude anyone with his gesture of appreciation. He heard more cheering on his way back to the bench after Yacabonis' fourth pitch caught the outside corner.

The home run in the fourth was the third-longest of his career and the 100th hit by Machado at Camden Yards and it came with an exit velocity of 110.3 mph per Statcast. Yacabonis retired the next two batters and departed at 45 pitches.

Rogers surrendered a solo home run to Manuel Margot in the fourth, hit the next batter and allowed back-to-back singles to Eric Hosmer and Machado to give San Diego a 7-2 lead.

Francisco Mejía homered in the fifth for an 8-2 lead. Seven runs scored with two outs.

Rogers was charged with three runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Miguel Castro walked Machado with two outs in the sixth. Seemed like a much safer plan.

Castro and Branden Kline each tossed two scoreless innings. Kline retired Machado on a popup leading off the ninth.

Manager Brandon Hyde had more reasons to grow irritated with his club. Smith missed a cutoff man, another ball should have been cut off, and Smith rounded third base after a run-scoring double with two outs in the third and Machado tagged him out.

The official scorer ruled it a double rather than a triple after the ball scooted past Franmil Reyes in the right field corner and Smith kept motoring to third base. Smith didn't slide, took a small turn around the bag and was out.

Hanser Alberto began the day leading the majors with a .406 average against left-handers and he opened the bottom of the first with a double to put Logan Allen in an immediate jam. Left fielder Hunter Renfroe leaped above the fence to keep the ball in play, but he lost control of it during the landing.

Mancini, the future All-Star, followed with a double to score Alberto and stake Yacabonis to a 1-0 lead.

Alberto also singled in the second, but the Padres had taken a 4-1 lead with four straight two-out hits off Yacabonis - including Margot's two-run single and Tatis' two-run homer.

Two singles off two right-handers later in the night raised Alberto's season average to .318.

Martin greeted Phil Maton with his opposite-field shot in the seventh that reduced the lead to 8-3.

Hyde on Yacabonis and last two relievers: "Yac had a good first inning and then got two quick outs in the second. A dribbler against the shift, a couple singles and a homer, so obviously there was some bad luck with the one groundball base hit. But Castro and Kline threw the ball really well, so that was good to see."

Hyde on Rogers: "I felt they took some good swings off him and a couple sliders into right-handers, which he's had a little trouble with, that hurt him. But he competed."

Hyde on Alberto: "He's making the most of a unique opportunity here where guys are getting a lot of major league playing time that they might not get in other organizations. Bert's doing a great job. I love the way Richie Martin swung the bat, stung three balls, fantastic. (Anthony) Santander continues to swing the bat pretty well.

"I thought we swung the bat really well. We had some loud outs. We only scored three runs, but we had a ton of hits and ton of hard-hit balls. So happy with how the offense swung the bat."

Hyde on fan reaction to Machado: "I thought that was a really nice ovation for him. I thought Yac did a nice job of giving him some time and letting him have that moment. That was well deserved for a great player, incredibly talented, somebody who's done a lot here and played a lot of big games here. So I thought it was pretty cool."

Alberto on four-hit night that tied career high: "A lot of work. Worked today. Obviously we get a loss but you've got to turn the page and be ready for tomorrow."

Alberto on whether this is opportunity or a new approach at plate: "I always say it's opportunity. I get an opportunity to play every day. Now I get the opportunity here and everything's going good right now."

Alberto on hitting lefties: "In my career I've been hitting really good against lefties. But this year a little bit different, so I've been seeing the ball really well and putting good swings. Sometimes I got some lucky hits. So having good results right now."
