Orioles set 2020 opening day roster

The Orioles today officially set their 30-man roster for Opening Day. The roster includes 16 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders, and five outfielders. 12 of the 30 players were on the Orioles' 2019 Opening Day roster. Eight players are donning an Orioles jersey for the first time.

Three players will start the season on the 10-day Injured List, right-hander Hunter Harvey (retroactive to July 20; right forearm strain), left-hander John Means (retroactive to July 20; left shoulder fatigue), and right-hander Dillon Tate (retroactive to July 20; right elbow contusion), while outfielder Trey Mancini (colorectal cancer recovery/treatment) and infielder Richie Martin (right wrist fracture) will begin the season on the 60-day Injured List.

The Orioles also selected the contract of infielder Pat Valaika and recalled right-hander David hess and outfielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Alternate Training Site. Additionally, outfielder Dwight Smith, Jr. has been reinstated from the Injured List.

The Orioles roster includes nine different Orioles who have made their first career Opening Day roster: right-hander Cody Carroll, outfielder Austin Hays, right-hander Travis Lakins, Sr., right-hander Evan Phillips, left-hander Tanner Scott, outfielder DJ Stewart, right-hander Kohl Stewart, right-hander Cole Sulser, and infielder Andrew Velazquez.

The Orioles open the 2020 campaign tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. ET at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. Left-hander Tommy Milone will make his first career Opening Day start, as well as his first start as a member of the Orioles.

The Orioles active roster will be reduced from 30 to 28 players on August 6 and from 28 to 26 players on August 20 for the remainder of the season and postseason.
