Orioles sign Vizcaino and Bond to minor league deals

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have signed right-hander Luis Vizcaino and infielder Brock Bond to minor league deals. They do not include an invitation to spring training. Vizcaino, 39, pitched in Mexico last year, posting a 1.40 ERA and recording 25 saves with Yucatan, and hasn't been in the majors since 2009 with the Indians. He's 35-30 with a 4.33 ERA in 11 seasons and 543 games. Vizcaino broke into the majors with the Athletics in 1999 and also has pitched for the Brewers, White Sox, Diamondbacks, Yankees, Rockies and Cubs. Vizcaino's best season came in 2002 with the Brewers. He was 5-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 76 games. Vizcaino signed as a free agent with the Yankees in December 2010, but the deal was voided in February due to an Achilles tendon injury suffered in winter ball. Bond, 28, is a switch-hitter who plays second base, third base, shortstop and left field. Most of his appearances have come at second. Bond has never played in the majors. He's a career .300/.398/.377 hitter in seven minor league seasons with the Giants, who selected him in the 24th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Missouri. Dropped down to Single-A San Jose last year, Bond batted .240/.339/.324 in 92 games. The Orioles have added Chris Correnti to their major league athletic training staff as assistant athletic trainer. He joins head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and assistant Brian Ebel. Correnti served as a performance consultant to the Orioles organization since the start of the 2012 season, working from the Sarasota complex. Correnti began his career in professional baseball in 1990 with the Astros organization before joining the Red Sox organization in 1994, where he remained in various roles through the 2005 season. During the 2001-05 seasons with the Red Sox, Correnti served as assistant athletic trainer and rehabilitation coordinator for Boston's major league club. He later held the position of rehabilitation specialist for the Mets from 2007-10 before joining the Orioles in 2012. Pedro Martinez has credited Correnti for adding five years to his career. Correnti also served as Derek Lowe's personal trainer. The Orioles will conduct an open tryout to find ballgirls and ballboys for the 2014 season at Camden Yards on Saturday, March 1. The judges will include members of the Orioles' front office, former players and local media personalities. Men and women 18 and older who are interested in serving as ballboys and ballgirls are invited to try out for a position beginning at noon. They should dress casually, bring their own gloves and use the Home Plate Plaza entrance to Camden Yards on the southwest corner of the ballpark. Resumes are also recommended. Complimentary parking will be available in Lot A. In addition to being able to handle a glove and field ground balls, interested candidates should be personable, customer-service oriented and available to work the entire 2014 season.
