Outfielder Hyun Soo Kim passes physical to finalize two-year deal

The Orioles' deal with Korean outfielder Hyun Soo Kim became official today after he passed a physical and signed his new contract.

We finally have Kim closure.

Kim will receive $7 million divided evenly over the next two seasons as the latest international signing under executive vice president Dan Duquette.

The Orioles wanted to introduce Kim to the media in a press conference at Camden Yards, but it's too late with the holidays upon us. He's going back to Korea, where he's getting married on Jan. 9. The handshakes can wait until Sarasota.

The club provided quotes from Kim and executive vice president Dan Duquette, which I'll pass along in my next entry.

kim-trying-on-jersey-sidebar.jpgKim, who turns 28 next month, is a career .318/.406/.488 hitter in 10 seasons in the Korean Baseball Organization. He attained career highs this year with 28 home runs, 121 RBIs and 101 walks in 141 games with the Doosan Bears, and he struck out only 63 times in 630 plate appearances.

Though he also has played first base, Kim figures to compete for a job in left field. Mark Trumbo is more likely to play first if the Orioles can't re-sign Chris Davis.

Kim wasn't subjected to the posting process, which freed him up to sign with any team after batting .326/.438/.541 this season.

The Orioles remain in the market for another outfielder. They also want at least one starting pitcher and have been seeking a trade partner due to the high cost of the second-tier arms. However, they also are negotiating with the agents for Yovani Gallardo and Scott Kazmir. They could go in either direction depending, as always, on the cost of doing business.

Notes: The Angels have claimed infielder Rey Navarro off waivers from the Orioles, according to a source. Navarro was designated for assignment to create a spot for reliever Darren O'Day on the 40-man roster.

The Orioles re-signed pitcher Bobby Bundy, older brother of Dylan Bundy, according to Baseball America's updated minor league free agent tracker.
