Pushing those buttons (updated)

Manager Buck Showalter wanted to get Corey Patterson in the lineup tonight. That was his primary motivation for starting Luke Scott at first base. Move Ty Wigginton to third and free up the DH spot for Patterson. Showalter knew that the Yankees were expected to start left-handers CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte this weekend. He also knew that Patterson had one at-bat since Sept. 6. So what happens? Patterson grounds a run-scoring single into right field in the fourth inning to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. Cesar Izturis followed with a single to load the bases with one out, and Matt Wieters crossed the plate before the Blue Jays could complete a 4-3-6 double play. Kyle Drabek, making his major league debut, has thrown 62 pitches in four innings. Brad Bergesen has thrown 55 through the top of the fifth, and his only real mistake is the home run to Jose Bautista. He's not the first. Bergesen has retired 11 of 12 batters since Vernon Wells was thrown out at the plate to end the first inning. Wells reached on an infield hit in the fourth before being erased on a double play. Update: Bergesen has thrown 82 pitches in eight innings. He induced two tappers to the mound and a harmless fly ball to center field in the eighth. This guy is cruising. He should be leaning back with his elbow sticking out of the driver's side window. Bergesen has retired eight in a row after allowing back-to-back singles to open the sixth.
