Quick hits during batting practice

Closer Zach Britton had his bags packed for tonight's drive to Triple-A Norfolk, where he was supposed to begin his injury rehab assignment Wednesday night. However, the weather forecast may create an unexpected detour.

Britton might join Single-A Frederick in Wilmington, Del., instead of pitching for the Tides. The Orioles are finalizing the decision and how it could impact his schedule.

Sitting at his locker earlier today, Britton said he'd likely pitch twice at Norfolk before the Orioles hit the road again. He expected to stay with the Tides for their series in Columbus. But he may be pitching in the Carolina League Wednesday night.

Manager Buck Showalter said Britton won't start or work the ninth inning in his first outing.

Outfielder Colby Rasmus might join Double-A Bowie this weekend.

Chris Tillman threw a 35-pitch bullpen session today in Sarasota.

Infielder Luis Sardiñas is joining Norfolk on his injury rehab assignment. Infielder Steve Wilkerson completed his 50-game suspension and is expected to join the Tides on Wednesday.

Slumping left fielder Trey Mancini is getting a day off. Showalter said it isn't health related.

Chris Davis moved up to the cleanup spot tonight despite is continuing struggles at the plate. Showalter cited Davis' career numbers against Nationals right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, the desire to break up the left-handed hitters in the lineup and how others also are slumping.

"It's very convenient to pick on Chris," Showalter said.

Showalter is aware that Cedric Mullins is tearing up the Eastern League, but he doesn't know whether the young outfielder will move up to Norfolk.
