Random notes from Oakland

OAKLAND - Left-hander T.J. McFarland, in his first game today since going on the disabled list with a left knee injury, didn't allow a run or hit in three innings with the Gulf Coast League Orioles.

McFarland, facing the GCL Twins in Fort Myers, walked one batter and struck out one.

Rain caused a postponement of yesterday's game in Sarasota and delayed McFarland's start.

Yovani Gallardo, who starts tonight against the Athletics, is 24-11 with a 3.92 ERA in 42 career starts in August. His 24 wins are the most in any month.

Gallardo has posted a 7.71 ERA in the first inning of his 14 starts this season, allowing 12 earned runs and 20 hits in 14 innings. He's also walked 13 batters and surrendered two home runs.

Orioles relievers lead the American League and rank second in the majors with a 3.07 ERA in 378 1/3 innings. The bullpen ranks second in the majors with 26 wins.

Ryan Flaherty doesn't have an at-bat since July 30 and only one since his last start on July 24.

On this date in 1963, first baseman Boog Powell became the first Oriole to hit three
home runs in one game, delivering three solo shots against the Senators in a 6-5 loss in D.C.

For the third consecutive year, the Orioles will host LUNGevity Foundation's Breathe Deep Baltimore, a 5K walk to raise funds and awareness for lung cancer in memory of late public relations director Monica Pence Barlow, on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Camden Yards.

The 5K walk will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude on the field. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments. Registration fees are $25 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, and $10 for youth. There is no race fee for lung cancer survivors and children four and under.

Registration is available online now at www.orioles.com/lungevity.

All proceeds of the walk will benefit LUNGevity Foundation, a non-profit committed to making an immediate impact on increasing quality-of-life and survivorship of people with lung cancer by accelerating research into early detection and more effective treatments, as well as providing community, support, and education for all those affected by the disease. The Orioles have raised nearly $430,000 for LUNGevity Foundation since the partnership began in 2012.

I'll be a Camden Yards to walk for my friend, to keep fighting for her. Hope you'll be able to join me.
