Rickard out with thumb injury (O's lead 4-1)

NEW YORK - The Orioles have swapped out their healthy reserve today, with Pedro Alvarez replacing Julio Borbon.

Borbon is starting in center field while Adam Jones is bothered by back spasms. Jones left last night's game in the bottom of the eighth inning, but he felt better afterward and planned on playing today.

Things can change quickly around here.

Joey Rickard injured his right thumb last night and won't start against Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia. Ryan Flaherty, who replaced Chris Davis at first base, moves to right field.

We'll find out later when the injury occurred. Rickard was in right field and he played the entire game.

Perhaps it happened when he attempted to haul in Brett Gardner's leadoff triple in the bottom of the first inning. He took a tumble on the warning track.

Matt Wieters remains day-to-day with a sore right foot after being hit by an Ivan Nova pitch Monday night.

"It's getting better," he said. "Each day it's gotten better, so we're going to continue trying to push some of the soreness and swelling out of there and whenever we can get it to where it's gone, we can get back to playing.

"Each day, see how it is coming in and we'll just keep moving forward and go from there."

And hope the Orioles, with an offense that's tallied six runs in the last five games, stop moving backward in the standings.

"It's tough missing games anytime, but this team knows whoever is on the field gives us a chance to win, so go out there and support those guys as much as I can," Wieters said. "But I like playing, so it would be better being in there."

Manager Buck Showalter didn't meet with the media this morning, but he's in his office and will be in the dugout for the game. He's still under the weather, but making the effort.

Meanwhile, you'd be wise to buy stock in hand sanitizer.

Vance Worley will start Sunday, staying on his turn after Tuesday's outing. The spot was listed as TBD, but Showalter confirmed Worley.

Ubaldo Jimenez remains in the bullpen for now. Tyler Wilson remains at Triple-A Norfolk.

Pitching coach Dave Wallace left the team to attend to a personal matter. He wasn't in the dugout last night, but is expected to return on Monday.

Bullpen coach Dom Chiti is in the dugout today and special assignement pitching instructor Ramon Martinez is in the bullpen.

Update: The Orioles loaded the bases against CC Sabathia in the first inning and J.J. Hardy delivered a two-out, two-run single off shortstop Didi Gregorius's glove.

The Orioles were 3-for-34 with RISP since the break before Hardy's single. Mark Trumbo popped up for the second out.

Sabathia threw 30 pitches in the inning. He walked Chris Davis to load the bases after Jonathan Schoop and Manny Machado singled.

Update II: The Yankees reduced the lead to 2-1 in the second on Gregorius' leadoff double and Starlin Castro's one-out single.

Update III: The Orioles lead 4-1 after Jonathan Schoop's two-out, two-run double in the seventh that also ended Sabathia's day.

The Orioles are 6-for-40 with RISP since the break. Tillman has retired 13 of 14.
