Rickard may be headed to disabled list

The Orioles are waiting for the results of the MRI on Joey Rickard's right thumb. However, they're braced for the worst and already have a player ready in case it's a disabled list situation.

It sounds ominous for Rickard, who hurt the thumb Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium while trying to catch Brett Gardner's leadoff triple in the first inning. He stayed in the game, but wasn't available yesterday.

The Virginian-Pilot reported that Dariel Alvarez wasn't at Triple-A Norfolk today for the team photo. He's headed to Baltimore as the potential replacement for Rickard, the Rule 5 pick who's batting .268/.319/.377 with 13 doubles, five home runs and 19 RBIs in 85 games.

Rickard had an X-ray on the thumb in New York before the Orioles scheduled the MRI today.

"I know more than I'm able to let on here," said manager Buck Showalter.

At this point, it would be a surprise if Rickard remains on the active roster. We should know more before the first pitch.

Showalter said there's "no new news" regarding the stomach virus that knocked him off his feet this week.

"Trust me," he said, "it happens in a hurry."

Chris Davis is in the lineup again, but he's not fully recovered. Manny Machado hit on the field before batting practice, and before the Orioles posted their lineup.

Showalter said he had trouble getting nine players on the field yesterday.

Matt Wieters remains day-to-day with a sore right foot. He's available to catch tonight, but he's still hurting and the Orioles would place him on the DL if he couldn't get behind the plate in an emergency.

"He's still pretty sore there, but he's getting close," Showalter said.

Showalter also said Dylan Bundy, who starts tonight, could remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season despite an undisclosed innings limit. He won't need to be shut down.

It's just a matter of staying healthy and being effective.

Showalter was asked about Hunter Harvey, 21, undergoing ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow Tuesday in North Carolina.

"I like our chances of getting an effective pitcher down the road," Showalter said. "We think he's worth the wait."

The Orioles were careful with Harvey, but he still required the surgical procedure after being shut down again with a strained right flexor mass.

"You can take every precaution possible and there's no magic grid," Showalter said. "Thank goodness there's hopefully a way to rectify it."
