Second-inning barrage by Reds roughs Roark (Nats win 10-9)

CINCINNATI - The Reds were able to score four runs in the second inning of Friday's series opener en route to a 7-2 victory over the Nationals.

On Sunday, the Reds picked the second frame to go after Nats right-hander Tanner Roark.

The first five batters reached base, thanks to four straight hits, highlighted by an Ivan De Jesus two-run double. A third run scored on a Ben Revere error.

The Nationals have surrendered 10 runs of the 18 total runs scored by the Reds in the second inning in this three-game set.

The Nationals have not managed a base hit versus Reds starter Jon Moscot through three innings.

The Reds lead 5-0 over the Nats through two and a half in Cincinnati.

Update: The Nationals quickly jumped back into the game in the fourth. In their second time through the order against Moscot, Bryce Harper singled and Daniel Murphy crushed a two-run shot over the right field fence. It was his 10th homer of the season.

Wilson Ramos went back-to-back with a solo homer to right-center field, cutting the Reds' lead to 5-3. It was the sixth time this season the Nats have hit back-to-back home runs.

With Murphy getting his 10th homer, he has now hit double-digit homers in four major league seasons (2016, 2015, 2013, 2009).

Stephen Drew and Revere added RBI singles to tie the game at 5-5.

Roark lasted only three innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He tossed 62 pitches, 40 for strikes. Sammy Solis relieved and did not allow the Reds to score in the bottom of the fourth.

The game is even at 5-5 through four innings.

Update II: The Nats continued to punish Reds pitching by going after Daniel Wright in the fifth. The Nats started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases.

Anthony Rendon then grounded a ball to third. Eugenio Suarez threw home to try to start a 5-2-3 double play. Catcher Tucker Barnhart failed to make the catch and tag at home. Bryce Harper scored, followed by Murphy.

The Nats led 7-5 and Barnhart was charged with an error, allowing the two unearned runs to score.

Clint Robinson added a sacrifice fly RBI to center field to score Ramos.

After five innings, the Nats have comeback to go up 8-5 over the Reds.

Update III: Murphy and Ramos added RBI singles in the sixth and the Nationals lead 10-5.

It's the third time the Nats have scored more than nine runs in a game this season: May 4 (13-2 at KCR) and May 29 (10-2 vs. STL).

Murphy has three hits, a homer and three RBIs. Ramos has three hits, a homer and two RBIs. Harper has three hits and two runs scored.

Update IV: Jay Bruce slammed a three-run homer off Felipe Rivero in the seventh and the Nats' lead was trimmed to 10-8.

Update V: Facing Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth, Brandon Phillips laced a double down the left field line to score a run and the Nats' lead was down to 10-9.

With the bases loaded, Adam Duvall pooped up to shortstop for the first out. Pinch-hitter Zack Cozart struck out on a slider.

Ivan De Jesus Jr. flew out to center field to end the game.

Papelbon earns his 15th save.

The Nationals defeat the Reds 10-9. It's largest comeback of the season for the Nats.
