Trout in rain too much for Orioles in 8-3 loss (with quotes)

Stevie Wilkerson kept trying. And all he had to show for his airborne attempts to catch a baseball were a few bruises.

A diving try in left-center field that resulted in a run-scoring triple. A leap at the fence in front of the bullpen that netted only more frustration and influenced the outcome of the game.

Mike Trout's two-run shot off Dan Straily in the third inning broke a tie, he doubled in the fifth to pad the lead and the Angels stayed in front to defeat the Orioles 8-3 before an announced crowd of 14,495 at Camden Yards.

Trey Mancini homered in the first inning and Chris Davis reached the seats in right-center field in the seventh, but the Orioles fell to 13-25 overall and 5-14 at Camden Yards.

The game was interrupted by rain in the top of the seventh as Yefry Ramirez finished his warmup tosses. It resumed with Miguel Castro pitching after a delay of 1 hour, 49 minutes.

Ramirez is credited with an official appearance despite never throwing a pitch. Castro tossed three scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to 6.63.

Mancini's first at-bat since Jackie Bradley Jr. robbed him of a home run resulted in a 438-foot fly ball to center that Trout couldn't touch, the solo shot giving the Orioles a quick 1-0 lead.

The location seemed a little risky, considering that it's Trout, but Mancini was able to circle the bases for his first home run since April 10. He reclaimed the team lead with seven.

Trevor Cahill has surrendered 13 homers to lead the majors.

Mancini doubled twice and almost deposited a ball into the bullpen in his last three at-bats Wednesday night. He lined to left field tonight to end the third and strand Jonathan Villar after a single and stolen base, and lined to third base leading off the sixth.

The hits and outs are getting louder.

Straily lasted only 4 1/3 innings, the third consecutive start that he failed to complete the fifth, and was charged with six runs to raise his ERA to 8.23. Evan Phillips let both inherited runners score on Andrelton Simmons' two-out single.

Brian Goodwin's double off Phillips scored Simmons and Kole Calhoun followed with an RBI single for an 8-2 lead. The two runs off Phillips raised his ERA to 7.91. He stranded two runners in the sixth and lowered it to 7.11, which isn't convenient for a young pitcher trying to stay on the roster.

Phillips has allowed two runs in each of his last three appearances and didn't retire any of the four batters faced in his previous outing.

The Angels tied the game in the second when Simmons singled and Calhoun tripled to left-center field, with Wilkerson unable to get close with his diving attempt. A runner stood on third base with one out, but a popup and fly ball prevented the Angels from taking the lead.

Straily retired the side in order in the first on 11 pitches, striking out Trout with a changeup and freezing Shohei Ohtani with a slider. But Trout got his revenge in the third after David Fletcher led off with an infield hit.

Trout launched a 90 mph fastball with the count full for his eighth home run. Wilkerson rose above the fence, but brought back only air.

There was a dramatic pause after Wilkerson landed on the track, confusing Trout as he approached second base. But the ball was on the other side of the fence and the Orioles were on the wrong side of the score.

Trout has 18 home runs and 35 RBIs in 52 career games against the Orioles.

Wilkerson had a hand in the Orioles reducing the lead to 3-2 in the fourth, lining a two-out double into the right-field corner and scoring on Davis' broken-bat single into left-center. Renato Núñez struck out looking to strand Davis.

Núñez went 0-for-4 and is 1-for-27 since collecting two hits in Game 1 of a May 1 doubleheader in Chicago. He's 4-for-48 since April 24.

The Angels scored five runs in the fifth as another storm approached. It hit hard in the seventh, just as the visitors had done earlier.

Davis' fourth home run of the season came against Justin Anderson after he fell behind 0-2 in the count. He pulled a 95 mph fastball in front of hundreds of fans who stuck around to the finish.

With his average up to .193, Davis needs a hit in his next at-bat to climb above .199 for the first time since the conclusion of the 2017 season. He walked with two outs in the ninth, the first for the Orioles since Tuesday.

Note: Richard Bleier tossed a scoreless inning tonight at Double-A Bowie, allowing one hit and walking a batter. He threw 14 pitches, equaling his total with Single-A Frederick in his first rehab appearance.

Manager Brandon Hyde on Straily: "I thought Dan battled. He pitched into the fifth inning. A couple mistakes to a guy that if you mistakes to is going to hurt you. Moved the ball around a little bit, just tough time getting through the third time through the order."

Hyde on Trout: "You've got to make really good pitches to Mike Trout. When you're full count and you leave balls in the middle of the plate, he's going to let you know. A couple times in big spots, he hurt us tonight. That's why he's a great, great player."

Hyde on Mancini: "He was yelling that when he came into the dugout, 'Catch that one!' It was awesome. He squared that up. That's strong when you hit a line drive into center field like that. He's swinging the bat really well."

Hyde on Castro: "That was impressive. Like I've talked a lot about, he's got such a great arm, throwing 97-98 mph sinkers. You see some of the swings that they take on him. Even the hit by Simmons, it was a touch slider that he just taps in a bad spot for us. I just saw confidence out there tonight. I saw a guy that was throwing strikes, that was working ahead a lot of the time. Pitching with conviction and keeping the ball down. I just thought he did a great job. Mixed in a few changeups, but the sinker really plays and if you can just harness that and locate it and are able to pitch to both sides of the plate, it's devastating, and I think you saw that by a lot of the swings tonight."

Hyde on small crowd at end: "It felt like the Florida State League a little bit. It's so weird when you can hear everything. You can hear the other side and you can hear the fans yelling in the outfield. Yeah, that's just a weird feeling."

Hyde on how bullpen looks with bad forecast: "I think hopefully we're good for tomorrow. I guess you never know, right? But it sounds like we're going to be OK for tomorrow, so I think we're good for tomorrow. We should be in good shape."

Davis on the chance to get average above .200: "It means a lot. I feel like I've made strides in the right direction really the last couple of weeks and just continue to work with Don (Long) and Howie (Clark) and try to fine-tune it as much as we can every day. Felt good today in BP in the cage and felt like I was swinging the bat well and felt good in the game. I felt like I was calm and ready, so I was glad to see it translate."

Davis on whether trying to go opposite field: "Yes and no. I'm just trying to hit the ball where it's pitched and not do too much with it. I think a lot of times when you see me yank pitches that are on the outer half to the right side, that's when I'm really struggling or when I'm really scuffling. Just really trying to see the ball and let it travel and put a good swing on it."

Davis on whether he doubted getting strength back: "I didn't necessarily doubt the strength. I doubted how I was using it. If you remember the ball in New York the first series against (J.A.) Happ, I hit to left-center and I felt like I barreled that ball up and it didn't really go anywhere. Even though it was cold, I still felt like it should carry, but I found some things here and there that have really kind of been my kryptonite as far as power is concerned the last few years and we've done everything we can to try to correct them, so it was nice to see it go out."

Straily on start: "I feel l need to change something. I feel like my pitches are moving right where I want them to be. My command's there. I'm just not getting the result. We're a few inches away from that game being a completely different outcome with the infield chopper he beats out, and then the ball that Wilky went up for. We're talking a few inches away from changing the way that game looked on paper and so I feel like I should look at some pitch selections.

"I really do feel like my stuff is moving, and I feel like I'm commanding it the way I want to."

Straily on whether making progress: "I feel like stuff-wise, I feel like I'm there. I'm just not getting results. I'm not getting the results I'm looking for yet. That's something that is really frustrating. It's not like I feel like there's something that needs to change or any sort of overhaul or anything like that. I'm just not getting the results.

"I'm going to show up tomorrow and keep working and keep going."
