Will Wilson win at home tonight?

Tyler Wilson takes the mound tonight with a chance to win his first game at Camden Yards. All four of his major league victories have come on the road.

This is news to Wilson, who had no idea until I brought it up yesterday afternoon in the clubhouse.

"Is that right?" he said with eyes widening. "I was not aware of that."

So we can assume he isn't losing sleep over it. Good for him. We'll just stash it in the "fun fact" file.

Wilson is 0-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 10 career games at home and 4-2 with a 3.94 ERA in nine games on the road. He's 2-4 with a 3.83 ERA overall this season in 10 appearances (seven starts).

Wilson pitched in two April home games that ended with the Orioles forming the handshake line. He tossed three scoreless innings against the Twins on opening day and he allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings against the White Sox in his final appearance before the calendar turned to May.

The former 10th-round pick out the University of Virginia registered four quality starts in five outings last month.

Tyler Wilson white night.jpg"When I look back at previous starts and stuff and I go back and take something away from each thing, the results are obviously part of it as far as winning and losing, but other than that, I've been kind of trying to really focus on the inner parts of the game and the smaller details that I can improve on, so honestly, I wasn't really aware of that," Wilson said.

"I think that's just the nature of the beast. We've had some really good games at home. I just haven't come out with a win. But that's part of it and right now we're playing great. I think the last two games after the way we lost the first two to Boston, to come back and play the way we played the last two games of the series is pretty awesome. We just want to build on that in this Yankees series."

Would the first win in Baltimore be special? Wilson never contemplated it, since, you know, he didn't consider how his four victories came on the road.

"I love playing in Camden," he said. "Camden is beautiful. I'd love to be able to win in front of the home fans, but I think it would only be more special in the sense that the team has won.

"I'm not positive, but I know some of my appearances we've won the game. I just haven't gotten the win. So I think that would be special, just in the sense to be able to remember that. And now that you've made me aware of that, I'll probably enjoy it a little bit more. But if it means that we win, I don't care if I get the W or Brad (Brach) or (Mychal) Givens or whoever else has like 18 wins down there in the bullpen.

"They have more than all of us put together."

Brach and Givens are each 5-0.

Wilson faced the Yankees on May 4 in Baltimore and allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings in a 7-0 loss. He's 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA in two career appearances over 9 1/3 innings.

The current Yankees are 5-for-28 (.179) against Wilson. Jacoby Ellsbury is 2-for-2 with a double and walk.

Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova is 3-3 with a 3.98 ERA in 11 games (five starts). He registered one quality start in five tries last month.

Right-handers are hitting .293 against Nova and lefties are batting .232. Another reverse-splits guy.

Nova is 6-4 with a 5.07 ERA in 15 career games (14 starts) versus the Orioles. He's 2-1 with a 5.14 ERA in seven games (six starts) at Camden Yards.

The current Orioles are 53-for-172 (.308) against Nova. Matt Wieters is 12-for-35 with three doubles and four home runs, Chris Davis is 9-for-29 with two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs, Mark Trumbo is 9-for-16 with a double and two home runs, Nolan Reimold is 5-for-15 with a double and Ryan Flaherty is 4-for-11 with a home run.

Adam Jones is 8-for-40 with two doubles and a home run, and Manny Machado is 3-for-19 with a double and home run.

With the reverse splits, does Reimold get the start in right field while Hyun Soo Kim plays left? Let's face it, Kim isn't coming out of the lineup.

The complication, and it's a good one for the Orioles, is Pedro Alvarez may be heating up. Ignoring the reverse-splits, he should continue to be the designated hitter based on his last three games, but it forces Trumbo into right field.

The alternative is to start Alvarez at third base.
