Wrapping up 5-1 win

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said rookie outfielder Joey Rickard will miss four to six weeks with a ligament injury in his right thumb. However, the Rule 5 pick won't require surgery.

The club is confident that Rickard will be part of the expanded September roster.

Outfielder Hyun Soo Kim had a good work day. He's eligible to come off the disabled list on Tuesday.

Showalter was aware that reliever Darren O'Day threw a scoreless first inning tonight at Double-A Bowie, allowing one hit and striking out two batters, but he didn't reveal when the veteran right-hander will come off the disabled list.

As for tonight's game, Dylan Bundy picked up his first major league win as a starter and the Orioles returned to first place with a 5-1 victory over the Indians before 39,358 at Camden Yards.

Bundy allowed an unearned run in five innings. Odrisamer Despaigne tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings and Zach Britton recorded the final out for his 31st save.

Showalter said he wanted to take Bundy to around 85 pitches. No word on how much the count will expand on Wednesday, when Bundy's scheduled to start again versus the Rockies at Camden Yards.

The Orioles are 55-40 overall and 34-14 at home. They returned to first place by a half-game with the Red Sox losing to the Twins.

Here's a sampling of postgame quotes:

Showalter on how much Bundy progressed from first start:
"I thought he was pretty good the first one. Like I said then, (Evan) Longoria ambushed him and a couple left-handers blocked the ball the other way. That's a real good offensive team over there, so that makes it even more impressive.

"He was good. He pitched as much as threw. I was talking to him when he was through. He was talking about watching Chris (Tillman) pitch, the benefit of having a guy like Chris. Save some bullets here and there. He felt good at the end. Started to give me that "I can keep going" look.

"I thought Despaigne was equally effective. It was a big outing to be able to stay away from guys there."

Showalter on Trumbo's three-run homer in the first raising Bundy's comfort level:
"I think normally it is. If you've been through the things he's been through, there's not a whole lot ... He was really going to pitch effectively tonight. Pitch is the key word. He knew it was going to be a challenge with Cleveland, like it will be tomorrow and the next night for anybody who faces them. But I think in this case, no. I think he was so locked in to what his job description was tonight.

"I think the first pitch of the game was a changeup. That kind of set the tone. Caleb (Joseph) obviously did a nice job with him."

Showalter on coming home:
"It means a lot. To come home to the type of crowd we had tonight with that enthusiasm and that amount of orange in the stands, that means a lot. I was even thinking about it before the game. You come from four days in New York, I know I heard a lot of guys say pulling into the train station last night, this is no knock on anywhere we've been, it's just that you appreciate coming home to Baltimore and the environment that you need to feel like you're going home to when you've been on the road to some of these places that we have to go.

"Going to Fenway Park and Toronto and Yankee Stadium's a challenge for a lot of reasons. To have that comfort of going to a place that you're comfortable in and you know that people are going to be on your side, that means a lot to us. I remember riding in the bus last night back to the ballpark. I don't know how to phrase, it but it feels good to be home."

Showalter on whether there's a 'defend this house' mentality:
"Not necessarily. We're playing a team that's got the best record in the American League tonight, and I hope we don't see why, but chances are we will in the next couple days. I don't think it's that. It's a place that our guys like to live. They like to play here, and people around baseball know that. There's a certain consistency that players, human beings feed off, things that you know are going to be there consistently. Our fans and our venue has been one of the most consistent places in all of baseball through the years."

Showalter on whether Despaigne showed a different gear:
"No, he's had that. This guy loves to pitch. He'd pitch every night if we'd let him. He likes going out there and pitching. He'd had two days off. He kept waiting for a spot. I thought I was going to get him the inning before with (Jason) Kipnis on deck, but he just kept finding a way, and the cutter was good for him tonight."

Showalter on Rickard:
"Four-to-six weeks from what they're telling us. Unfortunately, because of the way you have to splint it and everything - it doesn't require surgery - you've got to be very careful. I know I try to be careful about saying this guy had this injury and it took this long because each one of these things are different. You put it in the splint, immobilize and then you have to deal with the non-use of it, the atrophy or whatever. So, it's not like four-to-six weeks he's a player, but we feel like he's a guy that can join us in September if everything goes well with the rehab.

"I was talking to Joey and it don't look too good. Black and blue today. I went in and looked at the replay of it. I just know no surgery right now required."

Showalter on losing Rickard:
"It just opens an opportunity for (Julio) Borbon. It opens up an opportunity for Dariel Alvarez, who is here now, made it about 9-ish. I was going to play him in right field, but I didn't think it was fair for him traveling all day He was just trying to get his shoes and socks on and ramble out there. We'll get Kim back here shortly, hopefully.

"Joey's been a big contributor for us and will be again. It'll come at a time of need. It will be a nice September addition."

Bundy on his outing:
"It's great to give the team five innings and go out there and give the team a chance to win. That's the starter's goal in the game, is to give the team a chance to win, and I was able to do that today."

Bundy on what was working:
"Me and Caleb had a good game plan of getting all my pitches in the game early and we did that and I think we were on the same page and were able to get in a rhythm, and it worked out well for us."

Bundy on whether he threw more offspeed pitches:
"Yeah, I would think so. I mean, I threw more pitches, so I was just able to get my changeup and curveball in the game and show that to them, and it worked out."

Bundy on finishing the season as a starter:
"I mean, yeah, it could be if (Showalter) said so. You know, that's not up to me. I'm just going to keep pitching whenever I'm supposed to and that can all work itself out at the end of the year."

Bundy on making his first start at Camden Yards:
"It was great. It meant a lot to me and I hope there's more to come. And like I said, I just want to go out there and give the team a chance to win and get five, six, seven innings if I can."

Despaigne (using Einar Diaz as an interpreter) on whether this is best he's thrown:
"I felt good today. I worked with all of my pitches today. That was a good thing."

Despaigne on whether he feels like the second starter behind Bundy:
"I'm ready for any time and Dylan did a great job today. But any time, whether it's him or somebody else, I'm ready to pitch any time they want me to pitch."

Despaigne on pitch that hit Juan Uribe on the side of his batting helmet:
"I didn't want to hit him. I threw the ball outside. It was supposed to be on the outside corner, but it slipped out of my hand and went straight for his head."

Manny Machado on Bundy:
"It was awesome. We need more of it. He's on pace to do something special for us, carrying this pitching staff and helping us get to where we need to be. It was impressive what he did today. I know everybody in here was impressed. He's got to keep pitching, keep doing what he's doing and we're going to try to play as a team and put as much runs as we can on the board."

Machado on being back home:
"It was awesome. It was awesome to come home and sleep in your own bed and finally just come into your own clubhouse. It was awesome. It was a good day for us. I know everybody is excited to be back home after a little break and being on the road. We are just excited to be home in front of the home crowd and back to business."

Machado on hitting his third career home run off Trevor Bauer:
"Seeing pitches and I'm hitting them. He's giving me the pitches that I need to hit and you can't miss off pitches like that. Good pitchers that have good stuff like that, you have to take advantage of their mistakes and just try to make good contact with it."

Machado on scoring early with Mark Trumbo's three-run homer:
"It was awesome. We came up and got a couple runners on base and Trumbo came up and did what he does best. It was good to get that out the way quick in the first inning. We have been struggling with runners in scoring position lately on the road trip, so to come out here and do it right away was pretty great."
