Luis Ortiz joining rotation (and other notes)

Luis Ortiz will make his first major league start Friday night against the White Sox after debuting for the Orioles in relief.

Ortiz allowed three runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning in Friday night’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Ramirez-Throws-Orange-Sidebar.jpgYefry Ramírez will start against the White Sox on Saturday, with Sunday’s spot listed as TBD.

The rotation is adjusted with rookies Josh Rogers and David Hess moved to the bullpen and Alex Cobb perhaps pushed back again due to the blister on his right middle finger.

Hess is available in relief tonight, but manager Buck Showalter wants to give Rogers an extra day following Sunday afternoon’s outing against the Rays. Hess and Rogers could back up Ortiz and Ramírez in a “tandem” setup.

Showalter doesn’t like the word “piggybacking.”

The Orioles might add another pitcher to their expanded roster.

Outfielder Mark Trumbo and reliever Richard Bleier are at Camden Yards and have spoken to Showalter. Trumbo is recovering from knee surgery. Bleier is rehabbing from lat surgery.

Showalter hasn’t ruled out having Trumbo and Bleier available for opening day, but he also knows that they could begin the season on the disabled list.

The fall instructional league roster includes pitchers Hunter Harvey, Cody Sedlock and Grayson Rodriguez. Shortstop Adam Hall also is on the roster.

Orioles assigned to Glendale of the Arizona Fall League include pitchers Tanner Chleborad, Tyler Erwin and Jay Flaa, according to the Desert Dogs’ roster. Infielder Steve Wilkerson and outfielder Austin Hays also are listed, and catcher Martin Cervenka is expected to join the group.

Hays is questionable pending the results of the examination on his ankle that was scheduled today.
