Boswell spent more than 50 years as a sportswriter and columnist at The Washington Post and was named the 2025 winner of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s Career Excellence Award. He will be honored at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., during this summer’s induction weekend and will be included in an exhibit alongside other writers and broadcasters.

“We are honored to have Tom throw out the first pitch on Opening Day. He’s been a tremendous champion of Major League Baseball in Washington, D.C., and he is truly deserving of this honor,” said Mark D. The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Lucas Sims on a one-year contract and transferred right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson to the 60-day Injured List on Wednesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Sims, 30, joins the Nationals after he pitched to a 4.38 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 49.1 innings of work between Cincinnati and Boston in 2024. He produced 43 scoreless outings in 58 total games and ranked fourth in average exit velocity (86.1 MPH) and 20^th in hard hit percentage (31.3%) among all Major League pitchers last season. He finished his campaign by stranding the final 11 runners he inherited.

Since the beginning of the 2019 season, Sims ranks eighth in Major League Baseball in opponents’ batting average (.192). In eight big-league seasons, he is 22-19 with a 4.50 ERA and 12 saves in 245 games (14 starts) between Atlanta (2017-18), Cincinnati (2018-24) and Boston (2024). He has struck out 353 in 306.0 career innings.

A native of Lawrenceville, Ga., Sims was originally selected in the first round of the 2012 First Year Player Draft out of Brookwood (Ga.) High School.

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with infielder Paul DeJong (de-Young) on a one-year contract and transferred Josiah Gray to the 60-day Injured List on Sunday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

DeJong, 31, joins the Nationals after he hit .227 with 17 doubles, 24 home runs, 56 RBI, two stolen bases, 23 walks and 54 runs scored in 139 games between Chicago (AL) and Kansas City in 2024. He ranked ninth among American League infielders in home runs, and 41 of his 101 hits (40.6%) went for extra bases.

After playing shortstop for all but 22 games in the first seven years of his career, DeJong saw his first action at third base last season, producing five outs above average in 41 games at the hot corner, tied for fourth in the American League.

A National League All-Star with St. Louis in 2019, the Orlando, Fla., native is a career .229 hitter with 137 doubles, four triples, 140 home runs, 400 RBI, 25 stolen bases and 395 runs scored in eight Major League seasons between St. Louis (2017-23), Toronto (2023), San Francisco (2023), Chicago (AL) (2024) and Kansas City (2024). His 115 homers for St. Louis are the most in Cardinals history by a shortstop.

Since his debut in 2017, DeJong has played 784 games at shortstop, 41 games at third base and 22 games at second base.

Sarasota County Government’s annual economic report, which took place from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024, found that the Orioles generated more than $76 million in economic impact and produced more than 1,080 jobs in the state of Florida, including an impact of more than $61 million and 1,030 jobs in Sarasota County.

The analysis measures the total impact generated by the Orioles’ year-round operations in Sarasota, highlighted by the team’s Spring Training efforts, minor league training facility, and numerous events at Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex.

“As an organization, some of the most important things that we do are those that go beyond the playing field,” said CATIE GRIGGS, Orioles President of Business Operations. “Our impact in Sarasota and the State of Florida, both from an economic and community standpoint, are great examples of that. It is something that we are very proud of and look forward to expanding in the future.”

In addition to their Spring Training operations, the Orioles make it a priority to give back to the Sarasota community. This past fall, in response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Milton, the Orioles partnered with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County to support relief efforts through Season of Sharing, a long-running initiative that provides support to neighbors in need. The Orioles committed an initial $250,000 and encouraged their players, coaches, fans, and front office staff to donate, matching every additional dollar raised up to another $250,000. In total, the Orioles’ efforts raised more than $1.2 million to aid those impacted and support ongoing relief efforts. In an effort to provide additional, long-term support all net proceeds from the Orioles’ 2025 Spring Training 50/50 raffle will be donated to All Faiths Food Bank.

Ed Smith Stadium was also used as a staging area for Florida Power & Light, while the Twins Lakes Complex was used as a staging site for forestry operations and emergency staff meal preparation.

The Orioles today announced that they have invited 26 non-roster players to MLB Spring Training in Sarasota, Fla. The list includes 10 right-handed pitchers, two left-handed pitchers, four catchers, five infielders, and five outfielders. Baltimore’s current Spring Training roster is attached. Orioles pitchers and catchers are scheduled to hold their first workout on Thursday, February 13, while the first full-squad workout will be held on Tuesday, February 18. The Orioles today announced that they have agreed to terms with outfielder RAMÓN LAUREANO on a one-year major league contract for the 2025 season with a club option for 2026.

Laureano (pronounced lah-reh-AH-no), 30, slashed .259/.311/.437 (74-for-286) with 16 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 35 runs scored, 33 RBI, 15 walks, seven hit-by-pitches, and eight stolen bases in 98 games between the Cleveland Guardians and Atlanta Braves last season. He opened the season with the Guardians and batted .143 (10-for-31) in 31 games before being designated for assignment on May 20. After being released, Laureano signed a minor league deal with the Braves on May 29, before having his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett on June 15. He hit .296/.327/.505 (64-for-216) in 67 games after joining Atlanta. Laureano spent time on the 10-day Injured List from July 9-18, with a left oblique muscle strain. In 2024, he appeared in 67 games (39 starts) in right field, 26 games (all starts) in left field, and 14 games (9 starts) in center field while tallying seven outfield assists between the two teams.

Laureano is a seven-year major leaguer with the Athletics, Guardians, and Braves. Over his career, he’s appeared in 353 games in center field, 242 in right field, and 26 in left field. His 49 outfield assists since he debuted in 2018 are the fifth most in MLB during that time. He was originally selected by the Houston Astros in the 16^th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. The A’s acquired him for right-handed pitcher Brandon Bailey on November 20, 2017. Cleveland claimed him off waivers on August 7, 2023.

To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder LUIS VÁZQUEZ was designated for assignment. The Orioles’ 40-man roster currently has 40 players.

The Orioles today announced that they have acquired infielder Luis Vázquez from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations.

Vázquez, 25, was 1-for-12 with two runs scored, one RBI, and a hit-by-pitch in 11 games with the Cubs last season. He made his MLB debut on May 22 vs. Atlanta. Vázquez slashed .263/.347/.432 (62-for-236) with 16 doubles, eight home runs, 33 runs scored, 24 RBI, 25 walks, six hit-by-pitches, and one stolen base in 64 games with Triple-A Iowa in 2024. The infielder appeared in 51 games at shortstop, seven at third base, and six at second base in Triple-A. He was originally selected by Chicago-NL in the 14^th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Alberto Melendez Torres (PR) High School.

The Orioles today announced that they have agreed to terms with outfielder DYLAN CARLSON on a one-year major league contract for the 2025 season.

Carlson, 26, slashed .209/.287/.277 (49-for-235) with seven doubles, three home runs, 19 runs scored, 25 RBI, 22 walks, five hit-by-pitches, and two stolen bases in 96 games between the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays in 2024. He opened the year on 10-day Injured List recovering from a left acromioclavicular (AC) joint sprain before being reinstated by St. Louis on May 5. Carlson was acquired by the Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Shawn Armstrong on July 30, 2024. In 39 day games last season, he slashed .263/.327/.305 (25-for-95) compared to a .171/.261/.257 (24-for-140) slash line in 57 night games.

In five big league seasons between the two clubs, Carlson has batted .237/.317/.376 (365-for-1538) with 83 doubles, 10 triples, 37 home runs, 192 runs scored, 175 RBI, 158 walks (3 IBB), 30 hit-by-pitches, and 13 stolen bases in 484 games. Carlson, a switch-hitter, is a lifetime .285/.361/.431 (123-for-432) hitter versus left-handed pitchers compared to a .219/.300/.355 (242-for-1106) hitter against righties. He has appeared in the Postseason three times with St. Louis (2020-22) and his six Wild Card Series games trail only Yadier Molina (7) for the most among Cardinals players. In 2021, he finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting and set the Cardinals single-season records for rookie switch-hitters with 53 extra-base hits, 237 total bases, 31 doubles, 65 RBI, and 57 walks. Carlson was originally selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round (No. 33 overall) of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Elk Grove (CA) High School.

The club today announced that long-time Orioles outfielder ADAM JONES officially returns to the organization as a Special Advisor to the General Manager and Community Ambassador.

In this role, Jones will advise Executive Vice President & General Manager MIKE ELIAS on various matters and serve as a resource for the rest of the Baseball Operations department and Orioles major and minor league players.

Jones will continue to have an impact on the Baltimore community, participating in several club-sponsored community service projects including with the club’s adopt-a-school partnership with Harlem Park Elementary Middle School, Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), and the Challenger League. Through a myriad of events and opportunities, he will interact with Birdland Members, Corporate Partners, fans, and members of the front office as a representative of the club. Jones will mark the beginning of this role when he joins the Orioles in Sarasota to serve as a guest coach this Spring Training.

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Shinnosuke Ogasawara on a two-year contract and designated left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa for assignment on Friday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Ogasawara, 27, joins the Nationals after he pitched to a 3.12 ERA in 24 games in 2024 for the Chunichi Dragons of the the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization. He walked just 22 batters and allowed just nine home runs in 144.1 innings of work.

An NPB All-Star in 2023, the native of Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan pitched in nine seasons for Chunichi after he was selected in the first round of the 2015 NPB Draft out of Tokai University Sagami High School. He went 54-72 with a 3.67 ERA, 863 strikeouts and just 361 walks in 1098.0 innings (190 games) for the Dragons after he made his debut in 2016 as an 18-year-old.

Ogasawara represented Japan in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup, helping his team to a second place finish. He went 1-0 without allowing an earned run and struck out 11 in 8.0 innings of work.
