KANSAS CITY - Royals starter Yordano Ventura delivered the first pitch this afternoon following a delay of 1 hour and 35 minutes. The sun isn't shining, but at least it stopped raining buckets.
Manny Machado, who belted his 26th home run last night, drew a six-pitch walk off Ventura. Well worth the wait.
Machado hasn't missed a game this season, with today marking No. 127. He's the only player in the majors this season with perfect lineup attendance.
Seattle's Kyle Seager also has appeared...
KANSAS CITY - Outfielder Nolan Reimold cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.
The Orioles designated Reimold for assignment on Monday as part of a flurry of moves. They also reinstated outfielder Steve Pearce from the disabled list, recalled reliever Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Norfolk and placed shortstop J.J. Hardy on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin.
Reimold is expected to join the Tides in Gwinnett. He could have refused the assignment.
The Orioles...
KANSAS CITY - The tarp is off the field and the sky is clearing over Kauffman Stadium. I'm still soaked from the walk to the press gate - my shoes should be dry by Labor Day - but it's not about me.
Shortstop J.J. Hardy is flying to Dallas and will meet up with the Orioles on Friday. He can continue treatment for a strained groin.
Catcher Steve Clevenger also is flying to Dallas on Friday and will come off paternity leave.
Tyler Wilson is scheduled to throw a 40-50 pitch bullpen session today...
KANSAS CITY - Steve Pearce remains in left field today and Matt Wieters is serving as the designated hitter, as the Orioles attempt to gain a split of their four-game series against the Royals.
Ryan Flaherty is back at shortstop after homering last night.
I'm told that outfielder Dariel Alvarez won't join the Orioles today, so stay tuned.

KANSAS CITY - I wrote this morning about the possibility of a roster move. Well, I'm hearing that the Orioles are calling up outfielder Dariel Alvarez from Triple-A Norfolk.
Alvarez, 26, isn't on the 40-man roster, but there are three open spots. Selecting his contract isn't complicated.
I don't know whether a reliever is being optioned from the eight-man bullpen or if there's an undisclosed injury. I don't know whether Alvarez is being added today or placed on the taxi squad. But he's...
KANSAS CITY - Are the Orioles prepared to make another roster move today? There are some rumblings, so stay tuned.
They still have an eight-man bullpen, but someone will need to come off the roster Friday when catcher Steve Clevenger returns from paternity leave.
Perhaps they go back to a four-man bench today or place someone on the taxi squad. Anything goes around here.
With last night's 8-5 win over the Royals, the Orioles moved to within two games of the second wild card. They can gain a...
KANSAS CITY - Music played in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium tonight. The televisions were tuned to baseball games. Players sat at tables and dined together, plastic containers shared by one group that preferred homemade rice dishes.
The Orioles no longer sat in silence. They no longer were tucked away in areas off limits to the media. They seemed happy again.
Losers of their six previous games, the Orioles busted out tonight by hitting five home runs in an 8-5 victory over the...
KANSAS CITY - Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he wanted to put Jimmy Paredes in the lineup the day after a costly fielding error in the 12th inning allowed the Twins to score the tiebreaking run and complete a four-game sweep. He prefers to get a player back on the field rather than have him sit on the bench and dwell on the mistake, wondering whether the club has lost confidence in him.
Paredes didn't make it into Monday's lineup in Kansas City, but he's returned to it tonight, serving...
KANSAS CITY - Hunter Harvey will throw another bullpen session on Thursday while recovering from a strained right flexor mass, and the Orioles remain encouraged by his progression.
How much? The club is talking about sending Harvey to the fall instructional league in Sarasota and later assigning him to the Arizona Fall League.
Harvey, the 22nd-overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Bandys (N.C.) High School, may have reached the majors in September if not for the injury. He...
KANSAS CITY - With the Orioles facing Royals right-hander Johnny Cueto tonight, Ryan Flaherty gets the start at shortstop and Jimmy Paredes serves as the designated hitter.
Steve Clevenger was serving as the left-handed DH, but he's on paternity leave.
Paredes is starting for the first time since Aug. 12. He's 4-for-34 with 15 strikeouts this month.
The Orioles confirmed that former All-Star closer Chris Perez has retired. Perez was working out in Sarasota while serving his 50-game suspension...
KANSAS CITY - The Orioles will face three left-handed starters when their road trip shifts to Arlington.
The Rangers are sending Cole Hamels (7-8, 3.82 ERA), Martin Perez (1-3, 5.30 ERA) and Derek Holland (1-1, 4.73 ERA) to the mound for the three-game series that begins on Friday. The Orioles list Kevin Gausman (2-5, 4.30 ERA), Ubaldo Jimenez (9-8, 4.26 ERA) and Miguel Gonzalez (9-10, 4.78 ERA) as their starters.
Hamels is 1-1 with a 4.73 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in four starts since the Rangers...
KANSAS CITY - As manager Buck Showalter stated last night after another loss, you can't draw one circle around a specific reason why the Orioles have dropped six consecutive games, why their season is slipping away from them.
It's the rotation, it's the offense's failure to score more than two or three runs, it's the inability to catch a break. It's a lot of things.
The Orioles are eight games behind the Blue Jays for first place in the American League East, but still 2 1/2 behind for the...
KANSAS CITY - It's not getting any better.
The Orioles have lost six consecutive games for the first time since Sept. 19-24, 2013. They're under .500 for the first time since July 26. They can't find consistency in their rotation or runs in their lineup.
Tonight's 3-2 loss to the Royals marked the sixth consecutive game where the Orioles have tallied three runs or fewer. It's happened in seven of their last eight games.
The top four batters were 1-for-17 with seven strikeouts. Gerardo...
KANSAS CITY - The Orioles will need to make another roster move Friday when catcher Steve Clevenger returns from paternity leave. They could remove an extra reliever from their eight-man bullpen, depending on what transpires over the next few days.
Manager Buck Showalter said the Orioles will face three left-handed starters in Arlington after the Rangers adjusted their rotation. He seems inclined to keep shortstop Paul Janish as part of a platoon with left-handed hitting Ryan Flaherty.
"We'll...
KANSAS CITY - Orioles shortstop J.J Hardy will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection Thursday, delaying his arrival on the road trip.
Hardy was placed on the disabled list yesterday with a strained left groin. He underwent an examination today in Baltimore and was supposed to fly into Kansas City to continue his treatments. The Orioles have a locker set up for him in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium.
The plan has changed, however, and Hardy won't rejoin the team before it arrives...
KANSAS CITY - The Orioles will try to avoid their first six-game losing streak tonight as their series against the Royals continues at Kauffman Stadium.
Paul Janish is starting at shortstop tonight after having his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk, becoming the 1,002nd player to appear in a game for the Orioles.
Steve Pearce is in left field against Royals left-hander Danny Duffy.
Chris Davis, Matt Wieters and Ryan Flaherty took early batting practice today.
Miguel Gonzalez is seven...
KANSAS CITY - The Orioles selected the contract of shortstop Paul Janish from Triple-A Norfolk today and placed catcher Steve Clevenger on the paternity list.
Clevenger is expected to rejoin the club Friday in Arlington. In the meantime, his wife Tiffany gave birth today to Peyton Lee Clevenger at 1:09 p.m.
Peyton is 6 pounds, 13 ounces and 19.5 inches long. Mother and baby are doing well. The Pride of Pigtown must be bursting with pride.
The Orioles summoned Janish as shortstop insurance while...
KANSAS CITY - The Orioles haven't sunk below .500 since July 26. Can they avoid taking another dip tonight?
Can they pitch better? Can their offense unload instead of scoring three runs or fewer, as it's done in six of the last seven games? Can they avoid costly mistakes in the field?
The errors suddenly are piling up. They began last night with 52, only two less than the runner-up Dodgers for fewest in the majors, and Jonathan Schoop increased the total with a poor throw in the sixth inning...
KANSAS CITY - The Orioles are a .500 team for the first time since July 27. Innings snowball and they can't dig out from under the storm.
The Royals scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth tonight and cruised to an 8-3 win at Kauffman Stadium, handing the Orioles their sixth loss in the last seven games.
Ubaldo Jimenez retired nine in a row and suddenly lost command of his fastball. The Orioles' offense shut down after Steve Clevenger's RBI double in the fourth, with Kansas City...
KANSAS CITY - We have controversy on the first pitch of tonight's game, and an Orioles lead three batters into it.
Lorenzo Cain appeared to run down Manny Machado's drive to right-center field before slamming into the fence and tumbling to the ground. The Orioles challenged the call and Machado was given a double.
Cain must have trapped the ball against the fence to regain possession of it.
Manager Buck Showalter came back out of the dugout to argue with crew chief John Hirshbeck that Machado...
