SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy rushed out of the clubhouse this morning to make his 8:45 a.m. appointment to undergo an MRA on his left shoulder, confident that the results would be positive and he'd be ready for opening day.
"I feel much better today than I did yesterday and I felt much better yesterday than I did the day before," said Hardy, who injured the shoulder while diving for a ball during Friday's game.
"It was kind of questionable - do we need to do it? - because...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Everth Cabrera is starting at shortstop today for the Orioles, while J.J. Hardy has an MRA on his sore left shoulder.
Alejandro De Aza is in center field with David Lough unavailable due to a hamstring injury. Ryan Lavarnway is catching and Ryan Flaherty is starting at first base.
Minor league right-hander Zach Davies is starting against the Rays. The bullpen includes Wesley Wright, Tommy Hunter, Ryan Webb and Logan Verrett.
For the Orioles Alejandro De Aza CF Nolan Reimold LF...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles reliever Ryan Webb said he's scheduled to pitch again today against the Rays in Port Charlotte. It's one of the few certainties in his baseball life.
Webb is out of options and unsure whether he's breaking camp with the team. He's narrowing his focus to getting ready for the 2015 season and letting the front office worry about the composition of the 25-man roster and bullpen.
"Well, I'm still here, so as far as I know, that's where I'm going to be," he said....
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles made three cuts tonight, reassigning outfielder Dariel Alvarez, infielder/outfielder Chris Parmelee, and pitcher Chaz Roe to minor league camp.
The major league camp roster has been reduced to 37 players, including five non-roster invitees.
Alvarez figures to get most of his starts in right field at Norfolk, with Julio Borbon playing center. He was one of the most impressive players in camp, especially with an outfield arm that's unrivaled in the organization, and...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Why do injuries always seem to crop up late in camp?
Here's Orioles manager Buck Showalter following today's 6-5 loss to the Twins:
On David Lough: "Still don't like where his hamstring is. I was going to play him in the 10:30 a.m. game over at Twin Lakes today, but he's not going to be able to play tomorrow, either. He might be a little longer than we thought."
On back spasms and hamstring soreness: "They're really running off of each other. One came from the other,...
SARASOTA, Fla. - David Lough won't play on Monday due to a sore hamstring and has become a strong candidate for the disabled list.
Lough already was sidelined with back spasms. He was scheduled to start against the Rays in Port Charlotte, but that's no longer a possibility.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter believes the injuries are related and he didn't sound optimistic that Lough, who's 5-for-27 (.185) this spring, would be cleared to play anytime in the near future. If he's placed on the...
ORIOLES GAME WRAPS
Score: Twins 6, Orioles (ss) 5
Recap: Miguel Gonzalez went 5 2/3 innings, the longest outing by an Orioles starter for a few minutes. Ubaldo Jimenez went six in Dunedin. Gonzalez was charged with five runs and seven hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. The last run off Gonzalez scored when David Hess replaced him and served up a two-run shot to Oswaldo Arcia. Adam Jones and Travis Snider hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first. Jones' two-run shot broke a...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles' cuts later today won't include Rule 5 pitchers Logan Verrett and Jason Garcia. The evaluations continue, along with the brainstorming on how to keep both of them.
Asked if there's a scenario where the Orioles could carry both right-handers in their bullpen, manager Buck Showalter replied, "Sure. I had one brought up to me a couple days ago. And if you know us ... Trying to find a way legally to keep all the pieces."
I'll say that it's an incredible long shot...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are expected to make at least five cuts later today. They won't be announced until after the split-squad games in Sarasota and Dunedin.
The vast majority of players optioned or reassigned will be position players.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said shortstop J.J. Hardy's left shoulder is much better today. The club is encouraged, but an MRA is still scheduled for Monday.
Hardy injured the shoulder while diving for a ground ball on Friday.
"J.J.'s a lot...
SARASOTA, Fla. - With J.J. Hardy unable to play today due to a sore left shoulder, Ryan Flaherty is starting at shortstop in the Orioles' split-squad game against the Twins at Ed Smith Stadium.
Manager Buck Showalter will stay in Sarasota rather than watch Ubaldo Jimenez in Dunedin.
The bullpen includes Zach Britton, Darren O'Day, David Hess, Branden Kline and Jon Keller.
David Lough is listed among the reserves, but he's expected to miss one more game while recovering from back spasms.
For...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have two lineups to post this morning, and they've started with the group that's traveling to Dunedin to play the Blue Jays.
Nolan Reimold will lead off and play left field. Everth Cabrera is in center field and Steve Clevenger is behind the plate.
T.J. McFarland and Chaz Roe are listed in the bullpen behind starter Ubaldo Jimenez. The bench consists of players brought over from minor league camp, including Rey Navarro, Michael Almanzar, Glynn Davis, Adrian Marin...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are playing two games today at the same time, leaving me to chose between the Ed Smith Stadium complex and Dunedin.
Give me a half-second to decide.
I'll be watching Miguel Gonzalez in Sarasota. The Twins are countering with Ricky Nolasco. I'll watch him, too.
Gonzalez has allowed six runs in 12 2/3 innings, with no walks and 11 strikeouts. He'll try to complete five innings today.
Ubaldo Jimenez makes his sixth start, all of them on the road. The Blue Jays are...
TAMPA, Fla. - The Orioles optioned pitcher Tyler Wilson to Triple-A Norfolk following today's 10-2 victory over the Yankees.
The camp roster has been reduced to 40 players and more cuts are coming on Sunday. Manager Buck Showalter said the roster will be down into the low 30s.
Showalter joked that Wilson never should have given up that one hit in his four scoreless innings.
"We have a high level here," he quipped.
The Orioles want Wilson to get ready for the Triple-A season, and perhaps come...
ORIOLES QUICK WRAP
Score: Orioles 10, Yankees 2
Recap: Tyler Wilson, the 10th-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Virginia, was nothing short of sensational. He retired 12 of 13 batters, allowing a two-out single to Carlos Beltran in the first, and struck out two. Alejandro De Aza hit a three-run homer in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Jimmy Paredes homered in the ninth. Jonathan Schoop had an RBI single and Ryan Flaherty lifted a sacrifice fly before De Aza's...
TAMPA, Fla. - The Orioles found out that Tyler Wilson reacts favorably after sitting in the dugout during a long inning.
Wilson watched as the Orioles scored five runs off Yankees starter Scott Baker in the top of the second inning to lead 5-0. Alejandro De Aza capped the uprising with a three-run shot to right field, his second of the spring.
De Aza was batting .161 with two RBIs before today.
Wilson came back out and retired the Yankees in order on seven pitches. I've got him at 25 pitches,...
TAMPA, Fla. - Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy will undergo an MRA on his left shoulder Monday in Sarasota and won't be available to play before the following day.
Hardy jammed his shoulder while diving for a ball during Friday's game against the Rays and the discomfort worsened this morning. He wasn't scheduled to make today's trip to George M. Steinbrenner Field.
An MRA involves the injection of dye into the shoulder. It's not going to come back clean because Hardy underwent labrum surgery...
TAMPA, Fla. - Right-hander Tyler Wilson is facing most of the Yankees' regulars today in his first spring training start.
Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is sidelined with an oblique injury. Catcher Brian McCann also is missing from the lineup. Otherwise, it's the A team.
The Yankees are starting Scott Baker this afternoon after rain interrupted yesterday's game and prevented him from pitching. They listed CC Sabathia as the starter, switched to Bryan Mitchell and switched again to Baker.
Baker...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy offered an update this morning on his left shoulder.
"It's a little bit more sore today than yesterday," he said, adding that he wouldn't have played this afternoon against the Yankees in Tampa if his name appeared on the travel roster. Hardy isn't sure whether he'll need to undergo tests on his shoulder.
"I think everyone kind of anticipated it being more sore today than yesterday, so I don't know. I don't know what their plan is," he...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy said his left shoulder is more sore this morning after slamming it into the ground yesterday while diving for a ground ball.
Hardy will rest today - he wasn't scheduled to make the trip to Tampa - and be re-evaluated on Sunday. He took his first anti-inflammatory pill and joked that he tried to finally make it through an entire spring without one.
Hardy said the injury wasn't caused by his collision with second baseman Jonathan Schoop, "so don't...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles make their only trip to Tampa today to play the Yankees and minor league right-hander Tyler Wilson escapes the bullpen to make his first start.
Bring on A-Rod.
Manager Buck Showalter is curious how Wilson will respond to that environment. The Orioles are focused on 2015, of course, but they have 11 pending free agents and want to get a head start on evaluating certain players.
Wei-Yin Chen and Bud Norris could leave after the season and Wilson has a chance to fill...
