The Orioles handed the Astros their first road series loss of the season with today's rain-delayed 5-4 win at Camden Yards.
It was made possible by Chris Davis' second home run of the day, a solo shot off Astros left-hander Tony Sipp in the bottom of the eighth inning.
A Sipp and a bite, so to speak.
Here's Davis:
On being more patient: "Swung at a couple breaking balls earlier in the count. Thought I did a better job of making an adjustment and making him throw it in the zone. That's big...
Ubaldo Jimenez made fast work of the Astros in the top of the first inning tonight, retiring the side on only six pitches following a rain delay of 1 hour, 11 minutes.
It wasn't that easy in the second inning. Jimenez allowed one run on three hits, including Chris Carter's RBI double that followed singles by Evan Gattis and Colby Rasmus. However, Jimenez stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout and foul pop.
Rasmus is 11-for-28 lifetime against Jimenez.
Jimmy Paredes reached...
Today's game will start at approximately 5:45 p.m. The rain has stopped again and the tarp is coming off the field.
Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed that pitcher Dylan Bundy underwent an MRI today on his right shoulder and it didn't reveal any structural damage.
The MRI confirmed that Bundy has tendinitis in the shoulder. He's been prescribed rest and anti-inflammatory medication.
Bundy was scratched from last night's start after experiencing discomfort in his...
Cuban left-hander Ariel Miranda passed his physical and signed a minor league deal with the Orioles.
Miranda compiled a 22-25 record with a 3.78 ERA over 80 appearances (64 starts) in seven seasons in the Cuban National Series. His strikeout/walk ratio was 3.04 (73/24) in 2013, his final year.
More on that later.
The tarp remains on the field following a light rain at Camden Yards. The game won't start on time, which delays Ryan Flaherty's first start with the Orioles since May 11.
Flaherty...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter met with reporters earlier today and explained the Orioles' decision to designate outfielder Alejandro De Aza for assignment to clear a spot for infielder Ryan Flaherty on the 25-man roster.
De Aza batted .293/.341/.537 with five doubles, three triples, three home runs and 10 RBIs in 20 games with the Orioles last season after coming over in a trade with the White Sox. He also gave the Orioles plus-defense in left field, which was a primary reason why they made...
Tyler Wilson is headed to Baltimore and will start Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox at Camden Yards.
Wilson gave up one run and five hits in two innings in his major league debut. He's 2-4 with a 3.29 ERA in eight starts with Triple-A Norfolk.
Left-hander T.J. McFarland was the other possibility for the doubleheader. Mike Wright will start Game 2.
Matt Wieters is back at Camden Yards after catching last night at Double-A Bowie. He won't serve as the Baysox's...
Ryan Flaherty returns to the Orioles lineup from the 15-day disabled list tonight against the Astros. Flaherty has been bothered by a right groin injury. There has been no corresponding move yet.
Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez is 4-0 with a 2.24 ERA in nine career starts against the Astros.
Colby Rasmus is 10-for-27 (.370) with five doubles, a triple, a home run and eight strikeouts against Jimenez. Jose Altuve is 4-for-11 with a double and triple.
Collin McHugh has made one start against the...
The Orioles are expected to make another roster move today with infielder Ryan Flaherty eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list.
Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Flaherty, who went 0-for-2 with two walks last night at Triple-A Norfolk, would be added to the 25-man roster. Flaherty has an option, but the Orioles intend to keep him in the majors.
The key for Flaherty, of course, is being fully healed after two stints on the disabled list with a right groin strain. He was fine the first...
Any critique of Orioles starter Chris Tillman tonight must come with the addendum that the Orioles scored one run and have tallied seven in their last 40 innings.
The offense isn't leaving any margin for error - or poorly located pitch.
Tillman remained winless since April 18 after allowing two runs in the seventh inning to squander a lead in the Orioles' 4-1 loss to the Astros at Camden Yards.
"Good, real good," said manager Buck Showalter when asked about Tillman's performance. "Had a...
Hitless in his last two games, Jimmy Paredes singled tonight in the bottom of the first inning.
He's got to pump up that average. It actually dipped to .336.
Paredes is serving as the Orioles' designated hitter, with Steve Pearce playing second base.
Chris Tillman made it through the first inning tonight on only 10 pitches despite a leadoff single by Houston's George Springer. Jose Altuve grounded into a 4-6-3 double play and Preston Tucker struck out looking.
Tillman issued a leadoff walk...
The battery on Steve Clevenger's cell phone picked a bad time to run out of juice.
Clevenger said he slept through five calls from Triple-A Norfolk manager Ron Johnson, who wanted to pass along news that the Orioles were calling him up. Pitcher Steve Johnson was next on the call list and he woke up Clevenger.
Clevenger has finally returned to the majors after being optioned on April 7 to make room for first baseman Chris Davis, who was reinstated from the suspended list.
"I'm excited," he...
The Orioles are hoping that catcher Ryan Lavarnway, designated for assignment earlier today, will remain in the organization and join Triple-A Norfolk's roster. However, executive vice president Dan Duquette will gauge outside interest over the next few days.
Lavarnway can refuse an outright assignment and become a free agent if he clears waivers.
Steve Clevenger was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and figures to stay with the club until Matt Wieters comes off the 60-day disabled list. Wieters...
The Orioles don't have any leaders in the American League All-Star balloting as Major League Baseball provides the first update.
Adam Jones, a four-time participant, ranks fourth among outfielders behind Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain, Los Angeles' Mike Trout and Kansas City's Alex Gordon. Jones has received 981,926 votes. Gordon has 991, 606.
Detroit's Yoenis Cespedes is fifth with 668,059 votes.
Manny Machado, an All-Star selection in 2013, is fourth among third baseman with 266,746 votes,...
The Orioles have recalled catcher Steve Clevenger from Triple-A Norfolk and designated Ryan Lavarnway for assignment.
As I wrote this morning, Clevenger was hitting .352/.413/.451 (32-for-91) with three doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs in 27 games with Norfolk this season. He played in 35 games with the Orioles in 2014, batting .225/.289/.337 (20-for-89) with eight doubles, a triple and eight RBI.
Over 118 career major league games, Clevenger has posted a .210/.270/.295 slash line with a...
The good news yesterday regarding Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy was that his left shoulder felt fine. He wasn't grimacing in the seventh inning because of pain shooting down his arm as he swung the bat.
Fans watching the game guessed shoulder or hamstring on my Twitter timeline. No one submitted "back" as an answer. But that's why Hardy came out of the game.
His back felt tight when he showed up at the ballpark and manager Buck Showalter could tell that something was wrong just from watching...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter expressed confidence that shortstop J.J. Hardy will be in Tuesday night's lineup against the Astros after leaving today's game prior to the top of the eighth inning with back tightness.
"I think he's going to be OK tomorrow," Showalter said following a 4-3 win at Camden Yards. "He was fine yesterday and had nothing. He came in today with a stiff back, and as the morning went on, he felt fine. Went out and took ground balls and some light swings. Thought he...
Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy said he expects to be in Tuesday's lineup after leaving today's game with tightness in his back.
Hardy was replaced after the seventh inning, one day after manager Buck Showalter gave him the day off.
"See what happens? I get a day off and I get worse," Hardy quipped. "No, I honestly feel better right now than I did in the seventh. I think it was the right decision. Buck just saw me favoring it a little bit. It's good. It's not bad.
"I think just kind of...
Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy left today's game after the seventh inning with back tightness, according to a team spokesman.
Hardy didn't play yesterday in the series finale against the Marlins in Miami. Manager Buck Showalter said he wanted to rest Hardy and keep him healthy, which included not using him as a pinch-hitter in the last two innings.
Hardy struck out, grounded out and singled today. He was batting .182 in 16 games since coming off the disabled list.
Hardy's single followed a...
Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen gave up singles to George Springer and Jose Altuve on his first two pitches this afternoon, but he escaped the jam with a pop-up, strikeout and fly ball. Altuve was in a 3-for-32 slump over his last eight games.
Preston Tucker and Jonathan Villar opened the second inning with singles to create another jam, but Hank Conger bunted into a 1-5-3 double play.
So this is Chen's plan against the Astros? Two quick singles followed by three outs?
Apparently not....
The news today from Major League Baseball that Orioles reliever Brian Matusz received an eight-game suspension came as no surprise considering that Milwaukee's Will Smith was handed the same punishment for the same infraction.
"Everything is based off precedent," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter.
Matusz is appealing the suspension, also as expected, and remains in the bullpen this afternoon.
"Each case is different and that's why you have the appeal process to make sure it's not just...
