Long after today's game ended at Camden Yards, Orioles manager Buck Showalter still didn't agree with the decision to reverse the out call at second base that led to his first ejection of the season.
Showalter is convinced that Jonathan Schoop held the ball long enough to get the force on Jhonny Peralta. Coming out of the dugout to argue the reversal is an automatic ejection.
"Ball's in back of the glove, just like the old rule, new rule, old rule," Showalter said after an 8-3 loss to the...
On the 60th anniversary weekend at Camden Yards, Orioles manager Buck Showalter just broke out his Earl Weaver impression, minus the kicking of dirt on home plate.
Showalter was ejected in the seventh inning for the first time this season, with second base umpire Jeff Nelson doing the honors. Bench coach John Russell will take over the managing duties.
Nelson ruled that Jhonny Peralta was out at second base on a force play after Ryan Flaherty made a diving stop up the middle and flipped the...
Kevin Gausman made it through five innings at 104 pitches, and the Cardinals hold a 3-2 lead over the Orioles.
Twenty-two runs in the first two games of this series and two today, the last scoring in the fifth on Lance Lynn's wild pitch with Nick Markakis on third base.
Gausman allowed two hits in the fifth, including Kolten Wong's leadoff single on a line drive to right that fooled Markakis into taking a couple of steps back before trying to come in and make a lunging catch.
Gausman...
Talk about a poor start to the day.
The Orioles find out shortly before the first pitch that shortstop J.J. Hardy has a sprained left thumb, forcing him out of the lineup. And the Cardinals score twice off Kevin Gausman in the top of the first inning.
Not exactly how the Orioles drew it up.
We won't know the severity of Hardy's injury and how many games he could miss until we meet later with manager Buck Showalter. It obviously depends on the severity of the sprain.
It's not his...
The Orioles just announced that shortstop J.J. Hardy has been scratched from the lineup due to a sprained left thumb.
The injury must have occurred during batting practice. Manager Buck Showalter will provide more information following the game.
Ryan Flaherty moves from second base to shortstop. Jonathan Schoop is starting at second base.
Hardy, who had played in 96 straight games, has been bothered previously this season with tightness in his lower back and a hamstring injury.
Hardy is...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter set his rotation for the Yankees series that begins Monday night at Camden Yards.
Bud Norris, Wei-Yin Chen and Chris Tillman will start for the Orioles. The Yankees will send Chris Capuano, Shane Greene and Esmil Rogers to the mound.
Miguel Gonzalez will work three to five innings for Triple-A Norfolk Tuesday night in Buffalo. The Orioles want to keep him available, Showalter said, in case there's a "physical issue" that allows the Orioles to bring him back...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter is sticking with the hot hand today. Or bat, in this case.
Delmon Young remains in the lineup, starting in left field against Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn. Nelson Cruz is serving as the designated hitter.
Caleb Joseph will attempt to tie the Orioles' record for consecutive games with a home run. Joseph has homered in five straight.
Miguel Gonzalez stopped by the clubhouse this morning. He's going to join Triple-A Norfolk on Monday and pitch the following...
If I have to provide a list of my biggest Orioles surprises in 2014, it would include Delmon Young hitting .354 in 96 at-bats against right-handers.
Did you really see it coming? Be honest.
Young is a career .301 hitter against left-handers and a .276 hitter vs. right-handers, including his production this season. If he had any shot at contributing in 2014 after signing a minor league deal in January, it figured to be in a platoon role against southpaws or coming off the bench against them....
The Orioles have scored 10 or more runs in back-to-back games for the second time this season. They also did it on April 23-24 in Toronto.
The club record is three straight games on May 24-27, 2003.
We're just scratching the surface here.
The Orioles hold a six-game lead in the American League East for the first time since Sept. 15, 1997. They're a season-high 18 games above .500.
Is this team sensing that a playoff berth is nearing? Can it smell the finish line?
"No," said manager...
As a 28-year-old rookie, Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph can be viewed as a late bloomer.
He's proving that it's never too late to climb into a team's record book.
Joseph homered in his fifth consecutive game today to set the Orioles mark for catchers. The overall record of six is shared by Chris Davis (2012) and Reggie Jackson (1976).
No wonder Jackson got the big payday from the Yankees.
Joseph had been tied with Ramon Hernandez (2006) and Gus Triandos (1959).
Joseph launched the first...
Ubaldo Jimenez's first inning today after coming off the disabled list included two more walks and a run.
Jimenez issued a leadoff walk to Matt Carpenter on his eighth pitch, struck out Kolten Wong and walked Matt Holliday. His 62 walks lead the American League despite his stay on the DL.
Matt Adams flied out, but Jhonny Peralda lined a double to left field on Jimenez's 27th pitch of the inning.
Carpenter scored, but Holliday was out at the plate - Delmon Young to Jonathan Schoop to Caleb...
The Orioles made room for starter Ubaldo Jimenez on their 25-man roster today by optioning Miguel Gonzalez to Triple-A Norfolk.
Gonzalez is 6-6 with a 3.80 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) this season. In his last outing, he held the Blue Jays to one run over six innings in Toronto.
Gonzalez has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. However, the Orioles need a spot in their rotation for Jimenez and manager Buck Showalter wants seven relievers at his disposal. He doesn't...
Ubaldo Jimenez comes off the disabled list today to make his first start since July 5 in Boston. He joins an Orioles pitching staff that's registered a 2.80 ERA in 21 games since the All-Star break.
Jimenez is 3-8 with a 4.52 ERA in 18 starts this season. He's 0-5 with a 10.55 ERA in five day games, which is why manager Buck Showalter slotted him to pitch the nightcap of the July 5 doubleheader at Fenway Park.
Cardinals right-hander John Lackey is 14-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 26 career starts...
Last night, the Orioles posted their first home win over the Cardinals in franchise history. They hit six home runs. They hit multiple homers off three different pitchers for only the second time. They sat their red-hot catcher, Caleb Joseph, and his replacement collected three hits.
It was that kind of night. It's been that kind of season.
Nick Hundley didn't garner much attention, but I'm certain that he understood. It was all about the long ball and reconnecting with legends from the...
The lights are turned off in the press box tonight as the 60th anniversary celebration takes place on the field. I'm typing this blog entry in the dark.
Forgive the typos. As usual.
As the Orioles walked off the field following their 12-2 win over the Cardinals, they were greeted by a special group of ex-players.
"I've still got chills," said manager Buck Showalter. "We all just came up the runway and all the Hall of Famers are greeting our guys as they come off the field. That was...
For only the second time in franchise history, the Orioles have hit multiple home runs off three different pitchers in the same game.
It also happened on May 17, 1967 in Boston. The Orioles hit three homers off Dennis Bennett and two off Galen Cisco and Bill Landis in a 12-8 victory.
That nugget was provided by the Orioles' PR department.
Jim Palmer lasted only one inning in that game, allowing three runs and four hits. Bill Dillman got the win with five innings of relief.
Got to plead...
On the night that the Orioles celebrate their 60th anniversary, third baseman Manny Machado hits a three-run homer.
Earl Weaver must be smiling.
Weaver wouldn't have approved of David Lough's sacrifice bunt after Ryan Flaherty led off the second inning with a single, but otherwise...
Nick Hundley drove in Flaherty with a single to break a scoreless tie, Nick Markakis walked and Machado provided some serious lift to Justin Masterson's 88 mph sinker, the ball clearing the Orioles bullpen in...
The contingent of former Orioles inside the warehouse this afternoon for the 60th anniversary luncheon included franchise legends Eddie Murray, Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson.
They sat together afterward and fielded questions from reporters, with Murray sliding down a seat after spotting all the microphones aimed at the middle one.
"That's Frank's seat," he said.
This was a rare opportunity to chat with Murray, and he didn't disappoint.
Here's a sampling:
On being a young leader...
Orioles manager Buck Showalter had another busy schedule today that included a luncheon for the 60th anniversary celebration. He missed the praise heaped upon him by former players.
"I left. I had to go and get ready for St. Louis," he said.
"I was sitting next to Doug DeCinces. That's impressive. Listening to him and Eddie (Murray) and Al Bumbry, Ken Singleton, Rick Dempsey go back and forth, that was very entertaining. I didn't eat, listening to them talk about Earl (Weaver)....
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he's leaning toward starting Kevin Gausman on Sunday against the Cardinals and Bud Norris Monday against the Yankees.
A final decision probably will be made following tonight's game.
Norris held the Yankees to one run over five innings in the Bronx this season before leaving the game with a groin injury.
Showalter also will let tonight's game dictate the corresponding roster move Saturday when Ubaldo Jimenez comes off the disabled list and starts...
