SEATTLE - Pitcher Luis Ortiz said he wasn't expecting the Orioles to contact him. He was prepared to go home after the minor league season and was glad to have his plans interrupted.
One phone call and Ortiz was poised to make his major league debut.
"I was not anticipating anything," he said this afternoon. "I was just going about my business and everything fell in place. Just was thinking about going home. It was a long season. I did what I had to do this year and then this happens. So,...
SEATTLE - Chris Davis is back in the Orioles lineup tonight after being scratched last night with an illness. He's serving as the designated hitter.
Tim Beckham is on the bench, with Jonathan Villar moving to shortstop and Breyvic Valera playing second base.
Rookie Cedric Mullins also is on the bench against Mariners left-hander Wade LeBlanc. Joey Rickard is in center and John Andreoli is in left.
Luis Ortiz, whose contract was selected today from Triple-A Norfolk, said he expected to go home...
SEATTLE - The Orioles expanded their roster to 29 players today by selecting the contract of right-hander Luis Ortiz from Triple-A Norfolk.
The 40-man roster still has one open spot.
Ortiz, 22, was acquired from the Brewers with infielder Jonathan Villar and shortstop Jean Carmona in exchange for second baseman Jonathan Schoop. He went 2-1 with a 3.69 ERA in six starts with Norfolk, and his 31 2/3 innings raised his season total to 99 2/3.
Ortiz will become the 54th player used by the Orioles...
SEATTLE - Hunter Harvey will remain shut down for one more week before resuming a throwing program that was interrupted due to some discomfort in his right elbow.
Harvey underwent an MRI on Aug. 22 that didn't reveal any structural damage in the elbow, a huge relief to the young pitcher and an organization that's counting on him to become an integral part of the rebuilding process.
The tendinitis in Harvey's elbow is subsiding and he'll be allowed to throw again off flat ground. He was...
SEATTLE - The rookie pitcher watched the rookie center fielder chase triples in the left-center field and right-center field gaps tonight, with the rookie designated hitter waiting for his next turn at the plate. The rookie starter-turned-reliever warmed in the bullpen before the rookie reliever-turned- starter switched back to his previous role and entered in the sixth inning.
There's nothing to see in the standings besides the Orioles strengthening their hold on the first draft pick next...
SEATTLE - First baseman Chris Davis has been scratched from the Orioles' lineup due to an illness.
Chance Sisco will serve as the designated hitter, with Trey Mancini moving to first base.
Davis is batting .316 (12-for-38) in his last 10 games to raise his average to .177, but he felt sick on the team charter Thursday.
Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Davis would play if pressed to do so, but there's no reason to keep him in the lineup.
"It's my decision," Showalter said during...
SEATTLE - Joey Rickard is in left field and Caleb Joseph is behind the plate as the Orioles begin their three-game series in Seattle.
Cedric Mullins is leading off, followed by Jonathan Villar. Adam Jones is back in right field and Tim Beckham is the shortstop.
Pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis and catcher Chance Sisco are in the clubhouse and happy to be back in the majors.
Chris Davis is batting .316 (12-for-38) in his last 10 games.
The Mariners are 49-22 (.690) this season in games decided by one or...
SEATTLE - The Orioles have increased their active roster to 28 players as they continue their road trip with three games against the Mariners at Safeco Field.
Pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis and catcher Chance Sisco were recalled from Triple-A Norfolk this morning and are available for tonight's game.
Yacabonis has made four starts among six appearances with the Orioles this season and registered an overall ERA of 8.38 and a 1.759 WHIP in 19 1/3 innings. He's 3-5 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.224 WHIP in 21...
SEATTLE - If the Orioles really like reliever Pedro Araujo, they keep him for at least the first 17 days of the 2019 season.
Araujo's Rule 5 status will carry over, as it did this year with outfielder Anthony Santander. Manager Buck Showalter told the media in Kansas City yesterday that Araujo won't pitch again this season after going on the disabled list June 11 with a strained right elbow.
Some eyebrows were raised, of course, when Araujo was put on the shelf. He had a 7.71 ERA and 1.679...
Joey Rickard is starting in right field and Jonathan Villar is the shortstop as the Orioles try avoid a three-game sweep in Kansas City.
Adam Jones and Tim Beckham are on the bench.
Breyvic Valera is starting at second base with Villar changing positions.
Trey Mancini is the first baseman and Chris Davis is the designated hitter. Jace Peterson is starting at third base.
The Royals have won three straight series for the first time this season.
On this date in 1999, Cal Ripken, Jr. became the...
The Orioles have fallen 4 ½ games behind the Royals in the race for the second pick in next year's amateur draft.
Isn't that the race we're tracking here?
With last night's walk-off win for the Royals, the Orioles have dropped to 1-7-2 in their last 10 series. They're 0-83 when trailing after seven innings and have lost 12 of the last 14 games at Kauffman Stadium since May 17, 2014, including six in a row.
Dylan Bundy is 1-6 with a 8.46 ERA in his last 10 starts after starting out 6-7...
The Orioles have expanded their roster by one player today, recalling infielder Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Norfolk.
They still have two openings on the 40-man roster.
Valera, acquired from the Dodgers in the Manny Machado trade, was 1-for-4 with an RBI in his only game with the Orioles. He was batting .229/.310/.364 in 38 games with the Tides.
The Orioles have an extra utility infielder with Valera joining Jace Peterson.
John Andreoli gets the start in left field tonight as the Orioles...
The speculation can slow today as the Orioles and the rest of the teams in baseball can begin expanding their September rosters like waistlines at Thanksgiving.
The Orioles won't stuff themselves. Manager Buck Showalter doesn't want a huge crowd in the clubhouse and dugout.
A few players are expected to officially join the Orioles this afternoon in Kansas City, while others will trickle onto the roster in the coming days.
A third catcher always is part of the expansion, and Chance Sisco is...
The Orioles have designated veteran outfielder Craig Gentry for assignment and recalled outfielder Joey Rickard from Triple-A Norfolk.
Another spot was cleared on the 40-man roster, taking it down to 38, with reliever Jhan Mariñez outrighted to Norfolk after clearing waivers.
Teams can begin expanding their 25-man rosters on Saturday and the Orioles have created spaces for players who aren't on the 40-man.
Gentry batted .269/.321/.346 in 68 games and was 12-for-30 in his last seven games....
J.J. Hardy is bound to lose cell phone reception as he drives on a stretch of Montana highway. He's headed back to his ranch, where his family has been living for almost two months. The conversation cuts out and returns, which could mimic his playing career.
Though he didn't hook on with a team this season as a free agent, the former Orioles shortstop still hasn't filed retirement papers with Major League Baseball. He might give it another try this winter. Or he could continue to move toward...
Double-A Bowie outfielder Austin Hays and Triple-A Norfolk infielder Steve Wilkerson are the only confirmed Orioles assigned to the Glendale Desert Dogs roster in the Arizona Fall League.
The Orioles have four spots saved for pitchers and one for a catcher, who will be announced at a later date.
As I wrote yesterday, Bowie catcher Martin Cervenka would have to re-sign as a minor league free agent before the Orioles could send him to Arizona.
Orioles minor league infield coordinator Dave...
With the second trade deadline arriving on Friday, the Orioles aren't poised to make other moves after doing the heavy lifting last month.
Players must pass through waivers before a deal can be struck - most of them clear - and Friday marks the last day that they're eligible for inclusion on a team's playoff roster.
Everything can change with a single phone call or text, but I'm hearing that there's nothing percolating with the Orioles.
They checked the market for veteran outfielder Craig...
The Orioles had their hottest pitcher on the mound tonight and a chance to secure their first three-game sweep of the season. The opponent was sending out a rookie with only 12 starts in the majors and much better splits at home than on the road.
What could go wrong?
Stars that are aligned can scatter like a kindergarten class. But they also can be corralled, at least in baseball terms.
Alex Cobb served up three solo home runs in 5 2/3 innings and his streak of six consecutive quality starts...
The latest examination of Mark Trumbo's right knee today brought the same recommendation for surgery, which the veteran will undergo while ending his 2018 season.
The Orioles passed along the information this afternoon, saying that Trumbo will decide on a date and location for the procedure within the next few days.
Trumbo flew out to Northern California for the latest consultation. He was shut down and placed on the 10-day disabled list after an Aug. 19 game in Cleveland with discomfort in...
Rookie Cedric Mullins is out of the lineup for the third time in four games as the Orioles attempt to complete their sweep of the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.
Jonathan Villar remains in the leadoff spot and John Andreoli is playing center field.
Craig Gentry remains in left field after collecting three hits last night, including his first home run. Trey Mancini is the designated hitter and Austin Wynns is catching.
Mancini is hitting .324 (48-for-148) with seven home runs when leading off an...
