The First-Year Player Draft begins tonight and its significance to the Orioles is heightened by the approaching roster transformation related to future trades and possible free agent departures. Impact acquisitions are needed to cushion the blows which can be done via the returns on any deals and the selections made from the pool of high school and college talent. The latter needs to be more than just depth moves.
But no pressure.
The Orioles are prepared to punt on the 2018 season. They can...
The Orioles didn't waste any time waiting through the rain this morning, announcing that their game against the Yankees has been postponed due to inclement weather.
The game will be made up as part of a split separate-admission doubleheader on Aug. 25. First pitch for the opener is 1:05 p.m., with the nightcap starting at 7:05 p.m.
Separate admission is required for each game. Tickets and prepaid parking passes for today's postponed game will be honored for the 1:05 p.m. game and don't need...
The Orioles are recalling catcher Austin Wynns from Triple-A Norfolk today to replace Andrew Susac, who was optioned last night. Wynns, 27, will be making his major league debut.
It's termed "recalled" because he's on the 40-man roster.
The leadoff carousel spun in Joey Rickard's direction yesterday, with the outfielder and former Rule 5 pick chosen to bat atop the order.
If not him, then who?
Manager Buck Showalter has used seven different players in the leadoff spot, with Rickard...
The Orioles made a roster move following today's 8-5 loss to the Yankees, optioning catcher Andrew Susac to Triple-A Norfolk. The corresponding move will be revealed Sunday morning.
Caleb Joseph is behind the plate tonight at Norfolk. Austin Wynns is on the bench.
Joseph was optioned May 17 to make room for Susac, who is 3-for-26 with the Orioles. Joseph was batting .182/.203/.325 in 24 games with the Orioles, threw out 4 of 19 runners attempting to steal and committed four errors. He also had...
The Orioles were going to need more than one run today. More than Adam Jones' solo homer in the first inning that provided an early lead. More than they've been able to muster during an agonizing stretch.
By the third inning, they were going to need more than the four runs that the Yankees put on the board. The rain increased in intensity following a prestart delay of 1 hour, 44 minutes. A black cloud threatens to follow this team throughout the summer.
Miguel Andújar and Giancarlo Stanton...
The tarp remains on the field at Camden Yards this afternoon in anticipation of inclement weather that's delaying the start of the game. The sky is darkening. A storm is approaching.
Orioles reliever Darren O'Day will throw a bullpen session on Sunday and could begin a rehab assignment in his slow return from a hyperextended right elbow.
"If that goes well, then it will move pretty quickly then," said manager Buck Showalter. "He'll go out and pitch an inning and see where we are, so I...
The Orioles will observe a moment of silence before today's game to honor longtime major league scout Bruce Kison, who passed away early this morning.
Kison was diagnosed with bone cancer shortly after retiring over the winter. He was 68.
Manager Buck Showalter spoke earlier today about how much Kison looked forward to the next phase of his life and the opportunity to go fishing, one of his passions that had been neglected during his nearly 50 years in baseball.
Kison joined the organization...
Orioles closer Zach Britton needed only eight pitches last night to induce three ground balls for outs during his rehab outing at Double-A Bowie. He joked later that it took longer to arrange for the postgame spread.
Britton has thrown twice during his assignment and is scheduled to pitch Tuesday and Thursday for Triple-A Norfolk in Columbus. He'll go back-to-back games on June 11-12.
The Orioles will determine whether he's ready to come off the disabled list or needs another rehab...
Joey Rickard gets a turn today as Orioles leadoff hitter for their game against the Yankees.
Rickard is in right field against Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka.
Danny Valencia is playing third base. Mark Trumbo continues to bat cleanup. Chris Davis moves down to seventh.
Kevin Gausman started against the Yankees on April 6 in the Bronx and allowed two runs in five innings. He's 7-5 with a 3.53 ERA in 23 games (17 starts) against the Yankees.
Brett Gardner is 14-for-42 (.333) with three...
There will come a point later this month when the Orioles' bullpen includes Zach Britton and Darren O'Day. Together at the same time. Maybe it's not too late to produce dual bobbleheads for the occasion.
Britton hasn't pitched this season after undergoing Achilles surgery back in December. O'Day's been on the disabled list since May 6 after a teammate ran into him in the bullpen and hyperextended his right elbow.
(A perfect symbol of the 2018 season.)
If the Orioles stick with a seven-man...
A shot up the middle deflects off Andrew Cashner's glove and finds the grass in center field. A fly ball to deep center hits the heel of Adam Jones' glove as he attempts a leaping catch, his face smacking into the padded fence as the tie-breaking run scores on a triple.
Same inning. Same result at the end.
The Orioles couldn't catch a couple of balls or any breaks. They also couldn't score much against struggling Yankees starter Sonny Gray, who held them to one run over six innings in a 4-1...
The Orioles optioned left-hander Donnie Hart to Triple-A Norfolk this afternoon to make room for infielder Danny Valencia's return from paternity leave.
The bench is back to four players and the bullpen is down to two southpaws.
Valencia is available to play tonight.
"He'll take some swings, take some swings and get back in it," said manager Buck Showalter. "He's been away really for three days. Been a pretty lack of sleep three days, as some of you fathers know. You'll probably see him...
The Orioles' afternoon clubhouse had a reunion feel to it with outfielder Colby Rasmus and third baseman Tim Beckham at their respective lockers before batting practice.
Rasmus was packing his oversized bag for the drive to Prince George's Stadium, where he begins his rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie. Closer Zach Britton will pitch for the Baysox tonight due to weather concerns in Norfolk.
Britton will work an inning sometime after starter Hunter Harvey completes his three scheduled...
Zach Britton is heading to Double-A Bowie tonight to pitch an inning in the continuation of his injury rehab assignment.
Outfielder Colby Rasmus packed his bag and also left for Bowie, where he's beginning his assignment.
Baysox starter Hunter Harvey will work three innings before turning over the game to the bullpen.
Third baseman Tim Beckham was in the clubhouse this afternoon.
As for the Orioles' lineup, it's the same as last night before the postponement. Jace Peterson is leading off...
Last night's postponement pushes the Orioles' starters back a day in the series and bumps Dylan Bundy from facing the Yankees.
Andrew Cashner gets the ball tonight - weather permitting, of course - followed by Kevin Gausman on Saturday and Alex Cobb on Sunday.
The Orioles are off Monday, other than working the First-Year Player Draft, which keeps Bundy waiting until Tuesday night against the Mets at Citi Field.
Bundy is 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.582 WHIP in seven career games against the...
Jonathan Schoop will try to bust out of his slump tonight against Yankees right-hander Sonny Gray. He's batting fifth for the first time this season after occupying the cleanup spot in 21 games.
Manager Buck Showalter also used Schoop once as the leadoff hitter and batted him third in 14 games.
Nothing is working for Schoop while he's gone 3-for-20 with seven strikeouts in his last five games. Three of the strikeouts came last night against Nationals starter Max Scherzer.
He's getting good...
Jonathan Schoop has been lowered to fifth in the lineup for tonight's series opener against the Yankees. Mark Trumbo inherited the cleanup spot against right-hander Sonny Gray.
Schoop, last year's Most Valuable Oriole, is 3-for-20 with seven strikeouts in his last five games and is batting .230/.258/.375 this season.
Chris Davis is batting sixth tonight. Jace Peterson continues to lead off.
Andrew Cashner started at Yankee Stadium on April 5, his second game as an Oriole, and allowed only one...
Executive vice president Dan Duquette hasn't made the usual appearances around the batting cage this week. The First-Year Player Draft begins Monday night and the Orioles are updating their board in preparation for one of the most important events of the year.
The significance grows for an organization that's poised to lose a chunk of its roster to free agency or trades with the club now 22 games below .500. They need to get it right.
The Orioles hold the 11th, 37th and 87th picks in the...
Orioles rookie David Hess struck out Bryce Harper on three pitches tonight in the top of the first inning, freezing him on a slider and sending him back to the Nationals dugout. He got ahead of Harper 0-2 in the third inning, watched the count go full and then saw a changeup disappear into the left field seats.
It would be one of only two mistakes from Hess, who retired the last 10 batters he faced and worked through the sixth inning with only one run against him.
The other mistake was pitching...
The decision on Danny Valencia's return to the Orioles rests entirely with the player and his family.
Valencia went on paternity leave today following the birth of his first child, Oliver, early this morning. He can be away from the club for a maximum of three days, but is allowed to come back sooner.
It's a different rule if a player goes on bereavement leave. He has to be gone for the three full days.
"That's completely up to Danny and his wife (Jocelyn)," said manager Buck Showalter....
