ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Mark Trumbo said the MRI on his knee this morning showed some "fairly advanced arthritis" and the usual "wear and tear." No structural damage.
He expects to receive a cortisone injection - and perhaps have the knee drained - and could be available in a few days.
Trumbo is listed among the reserves for tonight's series opener against the Rays.
Trey Mancini is the designated hitter and Craig Gentry is in left field. Chris Davis is batting sixth.
It's a right-handed...
The Orioles signed Colby Rasmus to a minor league deal because they wanted a left-handed hitting outfielder who could give them plus-defense in right and also back up in center. He made it through eight games before going on the disabled list with a hip injury and only two hits with 13 strikeouts in 21 at-bats.
Rasmus is playing in extended spring training games and the Orioles miss him. Not the injured, .095 hitting version, but the guy that they envisioned after reaching agreement on a deal...
Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer exhibited pinpoint control again today on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network while defending his criticisms of first baseman Chris Davis during last night's postgame show.
Palmer didn't back down after the network aired responses from Davis and hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh.
After relaying how he read an article in January that pointed out Davis' propensity for taking third strikes, a total that led the majors, Palmer approached Coolbaugh in spring training for...
Mark Trumbo remains out of the Orioles lineup today with soreness in his right knee that could require further testing after the club arrives in St. Petersburg, Fla., to start a weekend series against the Rays.
Craig Gentry is playing right field and Pedro Ãlvarez is the designated hitter. Chance Sisco is catching. Jace Peterson is playing third base.
Chris Davis continues to bat fifth.
Dylan Bundy is 1-1 with a 0.70 ERA in four day games this season, with only two earned runs allowed in 25...
As the Manny Machado trade rumors swirled at the Winter Meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., the White Sox were deemed as a potential partner based on the Orioles interest in some of their young pitching. In fact, the club was tabbed by multiple outlets as the frontrunner over the final days.
Never mind that the White Sox were more inclined to keep right-handers Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech. The sides met and proposals were discussed. And "frontrunner" status was bestowed upon the...
Mark Trumbo had four hits last night, but he's out of the lineup for tonight's game against the White Sox.
Danny Valencia is the designated hitter and Joey Rickard is in right field.
Trumbo, who also failed to hold onto a fly ball in the eighth inning that sparked the White Sox's three-run rally, is 2-for-3 lifetime against right-hander Dylan Covey.
Chris Davis is batting fifth again tonight. He's 2-for-31 with 15 strikeouts in his last eight games.
Alex Cobb is coming off his first win as...
My trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., for the weekend series against the Rays will lack the entertainment value of having the opposing city's media staked out at Manny Machado's locker.
I'm fairly certain that the Rays aren't deemed as a potential trade partner for the Orioles or a candidate to sign Machado in free agency. It's a modest media contingent to begin with, and no one will be checking with Machado on his interest in playing his home games beneath the dome. Unless he insists on...
Mark Trumbo is in right field tonight and Pedro Ãlvarez is the designated hitter as the Orioles try to win back-to-back games against the White Sox in Chicago.
Chris Davis moves up to fifth in the order.
Kevin Gausman will try to bounce back from his second-worst outing of the season, when he faced the Red Sox and allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He's surrendered two earned runs (three total) and five hits in eight career innings against the White Sox in three appearances...
The same changes that enabled left-hander Donnie Hart to experience some success in spring training also got him back to the majors.
One of the nicest guys in the clubhouse has widened his mean streak.
It's not a personality disorder. He isn't undergoing anger-management classes. Hart just slipped into more of an attack mode on the mound.
Hart has made four appearances with the Orioles during two stints - he was optioned before Sunday's game in Boston - and allowed one earned run with no...
Chris Davis has returned to the Orioles lineup tonight against White Sox left-hander Héctor Santiago. He's batting seventh.
Danny Valencia is batting fifth, followed by designated hitter Mark Trumbo.
Andrew Cashner is 0-2 with a 4.61 ERA and 2.049 WHIP in four career games (two starts) against the White Sox. He's allowed seven earned runs (eight total) and 18 hits in 13 2/3 innings, with 10 walks and eight strikeouts.
Tonight marks Cashner's first career start at Guaranteed Rate Field...
The Orioles can't be accused of becoming monotonous. Not when they managed to find a unique way to lose yesterday while closing out the Boston portion of their three-city road trip.
It wasn't a wasted quality start or the typical offense malaise where baserunners are scarce and the opposing pitcher settles into cruise control. It wasn't a late defensive miscue, whether a botched grounder or popup, or the failure to turn a double play. It wasn't a close call going against them, where...
BOSTON - The Red Sox lineup can take a promising start and destroy it as if hooked to explosives. It can bring down a veteran pitcher or a prospect making his second major league start. And it won't be gentle.
David Hess needed only seven pitches this afternoon to cruise through the fourth inning and keep the Orioles within a run, but it all came apart in the fifth. Andrew Benintendi and J.D. Martinez hit two-run homers, the Orioles littered the bases and couldn't convert, and the Red Sox...
BOSTON - The Orioles are closing out the Boston portion of their three-city road trip today without Chris Davis in the lineup.
Davis' average is down to .166 with a .241 on-base percentage and .272 slugging percentage. He's gone 2-for-24 with 12 strikeouts in his last six games.
The Red Sox are starting Eduardo Rodriguez, making it an easier call for manager Buck Showalter to sit Davis, who's 5-for-36 against left-handers this season. Davis is 5-for-27 with 14 strikeouts against Rodriguez,...
BOSTON - Left-hander Donnie Hart isn't listed on the Orioles lineup card today and has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for starter David Hess.
First baseman Chris Davis, on pace for a record 231 strikeouts this season, is on the bench against Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.
Trey Mancini is playing first base. Craig Gentry is in left field.
The Orioles have homered in 12 straight games. Their 24 home runs since May 6 lead the majors.
The Orioles are hitting .210 in the...
BOSTON - The Orioles will face their third left-hander in four games this afternoon with the Red Sox starting Eduardo Rodriguez in the series finale.
Manager Buck Showalter must decide whether to keep Chris Davis in the lineup or start Trey Mancini or Mark Trumbo at first base. Davis struck out four times last night to run his streak to six going back to Friday night and his average is down to .166. He also has a .272 slugging percentage.
In 27 at-bats against Rodriguez, Davis has collected...
BOSTON - The reprieve from road losses was a brief one.
Dylan Bundy served up three home runs tonight within the first five innings and the Orioles lost to the Red Sox 6-3 at Fenway Park for their fourth defeat in the last six games.
The Orioles are 14-31 overall and 4-18 on the road. They haven't won back-to-back games away from Camden Yards since April 5-6 in the Bronx.
Mookie Betts continued his torrid stretch with a two-run shot in the fifth that broke a 1-1 tie and Andrew Benintendi...
BOSTON - The tarp came off the Fenway Park field tonight with about 40 minutes to go before the first pitch. The Red Sox say the game will start at 7:10 p.m. as scheduled.
The window to play is here.
Jonathan Schoop said he was made aware of his pursuit of Brian Roberts' club record for home runs by a second baseman, but not until they were tied with 92. Schoop set the Orioles record last night with his solo shot in the seventh inning.
"It means a lot," he said. "It's a great honor. When I...
BOSTON - A light rain continues to fall today at Fenway Park as the Orioles and Red Sox prepare for the third game of their series.
Mark Trumbo is in right field and Pedro Ãlvarez is the designated hitter. Jace Peterson is at third base and Chance Sisco is catching.
Dylan Bundy is making his second start at Fenway Park this season. He allowed one earned run (three total) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 3-1 loss on April 15.
Bundy is 3-5 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.536 WHIP in 13 career games...
BOSTON - In order to finally snap a 13-game road losing streak last night that tied for the longest in club history, the Orioles had to take an early lead, expand it, watch it reduce and hold on tightly until the final out. A typical night at Fenway Park.
A 7-4 win rarely has looked so good. The stretch of futility away from home, in its many forms, finally came to an end.
There have been blowouts and blown leads. Wasted offensive surges and quality starts.
The Red Sox beat the Orioles 10-3 and...
BOSTON - The Orioles scored a run tonight in the first inning. They didn't lose on the road. Alex Cobb earned a win. Crank up the music, take seconds on the clubhouse spread and celebrate with gusto.
Adam Jones broke a tie in the fourth inning with a bases-loaded, two-run single, Manny Machado collected three more hits and the Orioles defeated the Red Sox 7-4 at Fenway Park.
Cobb allowed three runs over a season-high 6 1/3 innings to win for the first time since Sept. 22 in Baltimore. He...
