McDermott recalled as 27th man, Urías in Game 1 lineup

Chayce McDermott is in Baltimore as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader against the Twins and could start Game 2.

The Orioles put McDermott on the taxi squad this morning. He’s made three starts in the minors after reporting to spring training with a strained lat, allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings with Double-A Chesapeake on an injury rehab assignment and one run and three hits in eight innings with Triple-A Norfolk.

McDermott, 26, made his major league debut July 24 in Miami, allowed three runs in four innings and was optioned.

Today’s Game 2 starter “is still undecided,” said manager Brandon Hyde, but all signs point to McDermott.

“We’re bringing McDermott up here as the 27th man. There’s a chance he starts that game,” Hyde said. “He’s not fully stretched out, starting-wise from that standpoint, so we’re gonna kind of get through Game 1 and then figure out the starter for Game 2.”

Left-hander Cade Povich was supposed to start last night before the postponement, but he’s withheld until the weekend Nationals series at Camden Yards.

“Everything’s OK,” Hyde said. “Sixteen games in 15 days, try to give guys extra days when we can. And with this doubleheader, if he started, we need a starter for Sunday anyway, so we thought the best thing was just to push him back a couple days.”

The Orioles reinstated Ramón Urías from the injured list this morning, optioning outfielder Dylan Carlson, and he’s playing third base and batting ninth. He hasn’t appeared in a game since straining his hamstring on April 30, but he didn’t require a rehab assignment.

“Just because not that much time missed,” Hyde said. "There are some things here in this facility that can simulate game action and at-bats, and we just didn’t feel like he needed it.”

The updates aren’t as good with infielder Jordan Westburg, who remains on the IL with a strained left hamstring. He was in the clubhouse again today.

“Westy had a little setback, unfortunately,” Hyde said. “He has stopped his running progression. We’re letting the hamstring calm down again. He’s gonna restart here whenever. He hasn’t started back up yet his running. That was unfortunate news.”

Jackson Holliday is leading off and Ryan Mouncastle will hit second. Cedric Mullins is batting seventh.
