O's game blog: Ubaldo Jiménez facing Tampa Bay in series opener

After taking two of three from Boston, and with a 5-0-1 record in six series to start the season, the Orioles host Tampa Bay tonight to begin a three-game series at Camden Yards. The Orioles are 12-5 and leading the American League East by 1 1/2 games over New York and two games over Boston.

On the mound tonight, right-hander Ubaldo Jiménez (1-0, 5.51 ERA) makes his fourth start, facing Rays right-hander Chris Archer (2-0, 3.20 ERA) making his fifth.

Last Wednesday at Cincinnati, he pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. It was the longest outing in which he did not allow a run since Aug. 8, 2015 on the road against the Angels.

Jiménez ranks 10th on the all-time wins list among Dominican Republic-born pitchers with 109 career victories. He is eighth on the all-time starts list among Dominican-born pitchers and 11th in innings pitched.

Orioles starters have recorded 10 quality starts in 17 games. That is tied for fourth in the American League and for eighth in the major leagues. Orioles starters have pitched to a 7-3 record and a 3.77 ERA. That ERA ranks fourth in the AL and 10th in the majors. The rotation ERA is 2.93 over the past 10 games.

Archer had an ERA of 2.21 through his first three starts. In his last game on Wednesday, he gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings against Detroit. The Rays are 4-0 in his four starts and have won five in a row dating to last season.

Archer ranks seventh in the AL with 27 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings and he has not allowed a homer this year. In 13 career games (12 starts) versus the Orioles he is 3-6 with a 4.50 ERA. In five career outings at Camden Yards, he is 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA.

* Manny Machado is 6-for-19 (.316) during a five-game hitting streak with a homer and three RBIs.

* Jonathan Schoop is batting .359 (14-for-39) over his past 11 games with three doubles, four homers and nine RBIs. He was hitting .105 after the first six games.

* Welington Castillo has gone seven consecutive games without an RBI.

* Chris Davis is 5-for-30 (.167) over his past eight games with 10 strikeouts.

Red Sox pitcher Matt Barnes received a four-game suspension and an undisclosed fine from Major League Baseball for "intentionally throwing a pitch in the area of the head of Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles in the bottom of the eighth inning of Sunday afternoon's game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards," according to an MLB press release.
