Roster move official: Izturis to DL

Roster move official: Izturis to DL
The Orioles placed infielder Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list today with a left groin strain. The move was announced a few minutes ago. Reliever Jason Berken has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take Izturis' spot on the 25-man roster. Izturis is making his second trip to the disabled list. He also was sidelined May 13 to Aug. 5 with a right elbow ulnar nerve injury that required surgery. Izturis went 1-for-4 in two games after being activated and is batting .200 (6-for-30)...

Orioles place Cesar Izturis on 15-day DL, recall Jason Berken from Triple-A Norfolk
The Orioles today announced that they have placed infielder Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain. The club has also recalled right-handed pitcher Jason Berken from Triple-A Norfolk. Berken is 1-2 with a 6.27 ERA (37.1 IP, 26 ER) in 31 appearances for the Orioles in two stints this season (March 31-May 20 and June 15-July 31). He has gone 0-1 with a 3.50 ERA (18.0IP, 7 ER) in five games (four starts) for the Tides. Izturis was on the DL, May 13-Aug. 5, with a...

Aberdeen's All Stars

Aberdeen's All Stars
The short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds will send four players to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game that is set for Aug. 16 in Lowell, Mass. IronBirds outfielder Glynn Davis, infielders Dudley Leonora and Joe Velleggia, and pitcher Trent Howard will play for the American League team. A Baltimore-area native, Davis played one year at Catonsville Community College. Although he went undrafted, the Baltimore Orioles signed him as a free agent and Davis hit .316 in the month of July....

Berken headed to Baltimore, and other updates

Berken headed to Baltimore, and other updates
The Orioles have summoned reliever Jason Berken from Triple-A Norfolk, and he could be officially recalled if the club decides to place infielder Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list. Izturis left yesterday's game in the fifth inning with a strained left groin, and he's "probably a little more sore" today, according to manager Buck Showalter. It's possible that a roster move will be announced later today. Berken could fill the bullpen spot vacated by left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes, who...

After testing his ankle, Hardy returns to the Oriole lineup

After testing his ankle, Hardy returns to the Oriole lineup
After putting his sore left ankle through some pregame paces, J.J. Hardy has pronounced the ankle healthy enough for duty and he returns to the Orioles' lineup here tonight against the Chicago White Sox. "Got here early, went through my treatment and then taped it up," Hardy said. "I went out and tested it, basically doing all the things that hurt me in Kansas City and it felt fine." He said there no longer is any pain to deal with it and that taking the Toronto series off did it a lot...

Chris Davis remains out of lineup

Chris Davis remains out of lineup
Shortstop J.J. Hardy has returned to the lineup after leaving Thursday night's game with a sore left ankle, but first baseman Chris Davis remains on the bench with a sore right shoulder. I'll pass along an update after manager Buck Showalter meets with reporters around 4 p.m. For the Orioles: J.J. Hardy SS Nick Markakis RF Adam Jones CF Vladimir Guerrero DH Mark Reynolds 1B Nolan Reimold LF Matt Wieters C Robert Andino 2B Josh Bell 3B Jeremy Guthrie RHP

This, that and the other

This, that and the other
Despite all the issues swirling around the Orioles, it's still hard to believe that they haven't won a series since June 24-26 against the Reds. You'd think it might happen by accident. They've got four games coming against the White Sox beginning tonight. A split doesn't count. It's got to be at least three out of four. We might have another roster move today, depending on the severity of Cesar Izturis' strained left groin. Izturis could go back on the disabled list, which would...

News and notes from baseball as pennant races get tight

News and notes from baseball as pennant races get tight
The National League East is all but over. The other five division championships have boiled down to a two-team race with the exception of the American League Central. The Detroit Tigers lead the surprise Cleveland Indians, but how about the Chicago White Sox, the third place team that started a four-game series Monday in Baltimore? The White Sox are defined by inconsistent play this season, but they are coming off a weekend sweep in Minnesota, a team they were 8-28 against in the previous 36...

Hobgood pitches well and his night is now done in Aberdeen
ABERDEEN, Md - After pitching very poorly in his last two starts, with the results to show for that, Orioles 2009 first-round pick

Almost game time in Aberdeen (6:25 p.m. start tonight)
ABERDEEN, Md. - It's humid and cloudy here at Ripken Stadium. The short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds, who are 16-32, will host the Hudson Valley Renegades, who have a record of 24-23 coming up at 5:35 p.m. Matt Hobgood is starting tonight for Aberdeen and expected to pitch four innings as the Orioles 2009 first-round pick continues to work his way back from a strained rotator cuff. Check back for updates on his outing tonight at Aberdeen. Here is today's IronBirds lineup: CF - Glynn...

Hobgood with a strong first two innings at Aberdeen (updated)

Hobgood with a strong first two innings at Aberdeen (updated)
ABERDEEN, Md. - In his last outing for the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds, right-hander Matt Hobgood gave up nine runs in just 2 2/3 innings. This start tonight at Ripken Stadium is going a little better for him so far. He has retired the side in order in the first two innings on just 22 pitches. The Orioles' first-round pick in the 2009 draft is working his way back from a strained rotator cuff. Making his fifth start this evening for Aberdeen against Hudson Valley, Hobgood threw...

Showalter speaks after 7-2 loss

Showalter speaks after 7-2 loss
The Orioles are 0-9-2 in their last 11 series after today's 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays. They haven't won a series since June 24-26 against the Reds. Buck Showalter meets with the media to speak about the O's 7-2 loss to the Jays "It's frustrating because it's something that, we'd like to win all three," manager Buck Showalter said. "Where we are, we need to make up some ground just from a W and L standpoint. Chicago's coming in here for four and hopefully we get some of our people...

Reynolds tape-measuring his words on long homer

Reynolds tape-measuring his words on long homer
As you know by now, Mark Reynolds' 450-foot blast into the second deck tied for the sixth-longest home run in the 20-year history of Camden Yards. Here's a partial list: Darryl Strawberry, 465, 6/17/98 Pedro Munoz, 463, 5/25/96 Jeffrey Hammonds, 460, 9/15/97 Mo Vaughn, 457, 7/796 Eric Davis, 452, 9/26/93 Mark Reynolds, 450, 8/7/11 Juan Gonzalez, 450, 7/26/92 Manny Ramirez, 450, 8/14/95 Russell Branyan, 450, 6/11/09 Mark Reynolds talks about his two homers including one that reached the...

Hardy and Davis talk about their injuries

Hardy and Davis talk about their injuries
Shortstop J.J. Hardy didn't reveal much about the CT scan taken yesterday on his left ankle, other than to say the news was good. Hardy isn't avoiding the topic. It's just a little confusing. He doesn't have swelling in the ankle and it doesn't always bother him. It's been somewhat of a mystery. "It was good news, definitely," he said. "Nothing wrong with the bone structure or anything with the bone. Looks like I'll take another day kind of easy today, don't test it really, and...

Checking in on the Aberdeen IronBirds

Checking in on the Aberdeen IronBirds
Even though I feel like my blogging performance has been solid enough to keep me in the majors, I am sending myself to the minor leagues later today. I'll skip today's game at Camden Yards and will check in this afternoon on the Aberdeen IronBirds at Ripken Stadium.

For Reynolds, second deck was in the cards

For Reynolds, second deck was in the cards
This just in: Mark Reynolds has sick power. Reynolds hit his second home run today, and the ball traveled an estimated 450 feet into the second deck in left field. Reynolds tied for the sixth-longest homer in Camden Yards history. It's the second-longest hit by an Oriole. Jeffrey Hammonds launched a ball 460 feet on Sept. 15, 1997 in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Indians. I've seen one other ball reach the second deck, and it came off Juan Gonzalez's bat during batting practice for...

Orioles facing perfection again (Izturis injured)

Orioles facing perfection again (Izturis injured)
Brandon Morrow retired the first 15 Orioles he faced last night. Ricky Romero has retired the first nine Orioles today. Romero has struck out three batters. He's let two balls out of the infield. He's disposed of the Orioles in 27 pitches. He also has a 2-0 lead after Jose Bautista poked a two-run double down the right field line in the third inning. Both runs off Alfredo Simon were unearned after third baseman Josh Bell misplayed Rajai Davis' grounder with one out. Bell never got in...

Simon gone, Bergesen in, Reyes for Tuesday

Simon gone, Bergesen in, Reyes for Tuesday
I'm speculating about the last part because the Orioles haven't announced it, but Brad Bergesen is no longer an option to start Tuesday night because he replaced Alfredo Simon today, and Jo-Jo Reyes is leaning against the dugout railing. Reyes isn't an option to pitch in relief today or he'd be, you know, sitting in the bullpen. Simon gave up six runs (four earned) and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter, struck out three and served up Brett Lawrie's first major league...

Reyes the frontrunner to make Tuesday's start

Reyes the frontrunner to make Tuesday's start
Nothing is official, but left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes threw in the bullpen today in preparation for Tuesday night's start against the White Sox. Reyes took a work day after failing to pitch in last night's 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays. He'd be ready to start Tuesday if he isn't needed in relief over these next two games. Brad Bergesen appears to be the other in-house candidate from the bullpen, but Reyes clearly is the frontrunner at this point. Triple-A Norfolk's Rick VandenHurk would be...
