Newly signed left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes will report to the Orioles tomorrow. He was scheduled to pitch against them Thursday in Toronto, but the Blue Jays designated him for assignment.
Right-handers are batting .314 against Reyes in his career. Left-handers are batting .260.
Reyes has a career ERA of 6.69 in April, 4.95 in May, 4.66 in June, 8.94 in July, 7.24 in August and 5.14 in September.
Reyes has made two starts against the Yankees. He's allowed 12 runs and 15 hits in 8 1/3 innings,...
The Orioles have claimed left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes on waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Reyes, 26, went 5-8 with a 5.40 ERA in 20 starts for the Blue Jays this season. He spent parts of the previous four seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
In 61 career major league games (57 starts), Reyes is 10-23 with a 6.04 ERA in 304 innings.
To make room for Reyes on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have transferred Luke Scott to the 60-day disabled list.
Reyes will be added to the 25-man...
The Orioles today announced that they have claimed left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes on waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Reyes, 26, went 5-8 with a 5.40 ERA (110.0IP, 66ER) in 20 starts for the Blue Jays this season. He spent parts of the previous four seasons with the Atlanta Braves. In 61 career major league games (57 starts), Reyes is 10-23 with a 6.04 ERA (304.0IP, 204ER).
To make room for Reyes on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have transferred outfielder Luke Scott to the 60-day disabled list....
Pitcher Brad Bergesen and his wife, Shea, are the proud parents of a boy named Parker Steven, who was born yesterday at 12:57 p.m.
Parker weighs in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces and is 21.5 inches long. Everyone is doing well, according to a team official.
No word on whether Parker throws right-handed or left-handed, or whether he can hold runners.
And no, pitching coach Rick Adair didn't tweak Shea's delivery.
Bergesen is rejoining the Orioles today in Kansas City. He's the one kicking and...
So Derrek Lee is traded to Pittsburgh and he hits two home runs in his debut. Of course he does.
Trade Felix Pie and watch him win the Triple Crown. Deal Kevin Gregg and watch him have a 1-2-3 inning.
The Orioles are back on the field tonight, and that means more roster moves are coming.
New pitcher Tommy Hunter will be added to the 25-man roster, and Brad Bergesen will return after being placed on paternity leave. The Orioles have two openings after they optioned left-handers Pedro Viola...
They were two outings 22 days apart, but in back-to-back big league starts at Boston and New York, Orioles rookie Zach Britton got knocked out twice in the first inning.
Over those two starts, the second of which was Saturday night at Yankee Stadium, Britton pitched a combined one inning giving up 13 hits, 17 runs with 13 earned and threw 85 pitches. Opponent batters went 13-for-17 against him in the outings and his ERA rose from 3.47 to 4.56.
Britton became the first pitcher in major league...
Left-hander Brian Matusz allowed three runs over seven innings last night for Triple-A Norfolk, with six hits, two walks, one strikeout and two home runs in the Tides' 6-5, 13-inning loss to Columbus. He threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Those are the raw numbers, which I passed along last night. Here's more:
Matusz's fastball was mostly 88-89 mph and topped out at 91, which is an improvement over past starts. He was usually in the 85-89 mph range before last night.
"His velocity was up...
I may owe Double-A Bowie second baseman Greg Miclat an apology. I think I jinxed him. I recently wrote about Miclat's amazing run stealing bases this year, where he had stolen 35 bases in 35 attempts.
Well, in game two of a doubleheader Friday at New Britain, Miclat's run ended at 36-for-36 steals. In the sixth inning, he was picked off first and caught stealing for the first time all year. His 36 steals leads all O's minor leaguers and ranks second in the Eastern League.
As Buck would...
We all know the drill for every game: J.J. Hardy, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, and then some form of Derrek Lee (now Chris Davis), Mark Reynolds, Matt Wieters, Felix Pie/Nolan Reimold/Luke Scott (when healthy), and Robert Andino/Blake Davis. The top four of the Orioles lineup have been the same all season since Brian Roberts has been out while the bottom half has been some version of the same players.
I have a problem with this - not with having the same lineup every game,...
Right-handed pitcher Bobby Bundy, who has been one of the best starters in the Orioles minor leagues this year, will be promoted to Bowie soon and make his next start for the Double-A Baysox.
The 21-year-old Bundy, the Orioles' eighth-round pick in 2008, is 11-5 with a 2.75 ERA over 20 starts at Single-A Frederick. In 121 innings, he allowed 102 hits with 31 walks, 100 strikeouts and a .230 batting average against.
Over his last three starts for Frederick, Bundy has allowed just one earned...
If you're a basketball fan, you're probably a little bummed as summer stretches toward fall. Unless there's some serious concessions, some legitimate efforts at mediating a messy labor dispute, NBA players will continue to be locked out and the 2011-12 season remains in jeopardy. Having just dealt with this situation in the NFL, we know how frustrating and maddening it can be to see a sport, its fans and its players twisting in the wind as legal eagles ply their trade in an effort to mediate...
The July 31 non-waiver trade deadline is gone, but that doesn't mean trades have stopped. They get trickier, though.
Now, if a team wants to trade a player, he has to clear waivers. For example, if the Orioles wanted to trade a pitcher to the Yankees, that pitcher would have to be offered to every other team in the standings before the Yankees could get him.
If, say, Cleveland wanted him, the Indians would put a claim on him. Then, the Orioles could either pull the pitcher back and or let...
What's the best way to approach a new month?
If you're the Orioles, you don't play.
Take a day off. Regroup. Try to find five capable starters for your rotation. Try to read the name "Davis" on the back of the first baseman's jersey without thinking of Glenn.
Now that the non-waiver deadline smoke has cleared, we can look forward to the August trade speculation. Deals are still consummated after July 31.
Jeff Conine was dealt to the Marlins on Aug. 31, 2003 for Don Levinski and Denny...
Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail spoke by conference call with reporters about the trade deadline yesterday evening.
He indicated he got plenty of calls about Jeremy Guthrie, but needed pitching back to part with the right-hander. He also revealed that a player like Adam Jones could have brought a good haul in return, but he was not willing to part with Jones right now.
Here is a transcript of some of his comments.
What was Sunday and the deadline like for you, was...
Brian Matusz made another start tonight for Triple-A Norfolk, and he went seven innings in the Tides' 6-5, 13-inning loss to Columbus.
Matusz allowed three runs and six hits, walked two, struck out one and surrendered two home runs. He threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes.
I don't have radar gun readings, so I can't help you there.
Matusz faced Toledo in his last two starts and allowed 12 runs (10 earned) and 15 hits in 8 2/3 innings.
Josh Rupe took the loss tonight, allowing the winning run...
Jake Arrieta faced two batters in the sixth inning, walked them both and was removed from the game.
And so it begins.
Manager Buck Showalter took his new bullpen for a test drive at Yankee Stadium. It won't always look this way, unless you expect Pedro Viola and Mike Ballard to stick around for a while, but it never will be the same without Koji Uehara.
Jim Johnson, normally seen in the seventh or eighth inning, took the ball with no outs in the sixth and escaped the jam on nine pitches. He...
I'm sure I wasn't the only Orioles fan with the Birds' 30-3 loss to Texas on my mind when the Yankees scored a dozen first-inning runs Saturday night. I was fairly certain New York wouldn't stay on pace for 108 runs, but 30 runs certainly seemed in the realm of possibility.
Thankfully, the Yankees fell far short of the Rangers' record-breaking effort in 2007. Saturday's 17-3 loss therefore doesn't compare to the Texas baseball massacre on the whole. However, it was actually worse in...
For the second time in a row on this road trip, the Orioles won the first game of a series, but then lost the rest.
The Orioles went 1-2 at Toronto and won Friday at New York behind Jeremy Guthrie. But they lost the final three games at Yankee Stadium with the series ending today as New York beat the Orioles 4-2.
The Orioles were out-scored 29-8 in the last three games.
Today, Jake Arrieta gave up four runs in the fourth after blanking New York for three innings. That inning started with a...
