A mid-afternoon stat or two

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The New York Mets currently have the best record in the major leagues at 4-0. Let's just take a second and let that all sink in. I know, I didn't see it coming, either. Tonight's starter for the Mets, Dillon Gee, won 13 games for New York last year in just his first full season in the big leagues. He's had good success against Nationals hitters in his brief career, as well; of the seven Nats who have faced Gee more than five times, Jayson Werth has the highest batting average at a lowly .250. Ryan Zimmerman (.167 in 12 at-bats) and Danny Espinosa (.091 in 11 at-bats) haven't been able to do much off Gee, while Ian Desmond (.231 with five strikeouts in 13 at-bats) and Roger Bernadina (.111 in nine at-bats) have also struggled against him, but each have a home run off the righty. On the flip side, Ross Detwiler, who will get the ball tonight for the Nats, has fared well against Mets hitters in limited action. No hitter currently on the Mets' roster has more than one hit against Detwiler with the exception of David Wright, who is 4-for-8 off Detwiler, with a home run and two doubles. Meanwhile, the Nats have struck out 35 times through 36 innings so far this season. That total is eighth-worst in the majors.
