An offensive explosion in Colorado (Nats win 12-5)

I guess the Nationals were getting a little tired of everyone talking about how much their offense stinks. They've exploded for 12 runs and 16 hits tonight, and have only played six innings. The most runs the Nats had scored in a game this season prior to tonight was nine. They'd already matched that total by the end of the fifth inning. Every hitter in the lineup with the exception of Bryce Harper has a hit. Adam LaRoche has two home runs. Tyler Moore has a three-run shot which I'm not sure has landed yet. Ryan Zimmerman (who topped the 1,000-hit mark for his career) has three hits, including a double and his first homer since June 7. The Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 hitters in the Nationals' order all have multiple-RBI games. Ian Desmond is 4-for-4 with three doubles, giving him 20 on the season and making him the first Nats hitter to leg out three two-baggers in a game since Alberto Gonzalez did it on Sept. 9, 2009. laroche high five dug out colorado sidebar.jpgWashington scored five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, giving them five straight innings with a run for the first time this season. Phew. Give me a second to let my fingers rest. This has been a complete offensive explosion, and it comes at the perfect time, with the Nats scoring just 2.5 runs per game over their last 10 contests. Some fans were questioning hitting coach Rick Eckstein's job security. Others were growing tired of the lack of production out of the middle of the order. Tonight is just one game. But boy, for a team that has had serious issues putting runs on the board lately, it's nice to see. Update: How about 12 runs and a franchise-record-tying 21 hits? That'll do, huh? The Nationals beat the Rockies 12-5 tonight, snapping out of a lengthy offensive funk. Gio Gonzalez got his 10th win tonight, and he probably could've stayed in the clubhouse all night to top the double-digit victory mark.
