A plethora of notes and quotes from Thursday's win over New York

OK, since I cautioned fans not to read too much on the plus or negative side of Jake Arrieta's first Major League start, I won't either. I won't gush about his solid performance vs. the Yankees or say I told you so about him making his first big league start vs. New York. But it was a good night to see an O's fifth-round pick get the win throwing heaters at the start and an O's 16th-round pick doing the same at the end. David Hernandez recorded his first Major League save, needing 13 pitches in the ninth. Hernandez talked about the save: "There were a lot of things going through my mind. A tough lineup to get a save against. It was all a blur, that's what it was. "I would love to have that role (of closer). I've always said I'd like to be a starter, but wherever I have the most success makes sense." He was asked if he likes closing. "I do now," he said. "That probably ranks right up there with making my Major League debut. "It's very special to get a win in your Major League debut and I was happy to be a part of that." Scott Moore's solo homer in the fifth tied the game at 3-3. It was Moore's first big league homer since April 8, 2008 at Texas. Moore talked about his homer off of A.J. Burnett: "It was a fastball over the plate and I was able to barrel it. The more at bats I've gotten, I've been able to relax a bit and not be so jumpy and give myself a better chance to get hits. I wasn't thinking that's my first homer since '08 but, a one-run game and it felt good." Moore is 6 for 17 with a homer and 4 RBI over his last six games. Here are Matt Wieters' quotes on Arrieta's night: "I thought it was an impressive debut. Just how calm he was there, he took his time and it looked like just another start (for him). I'm sure he had some butterflies on the inside but you couldn't tell on the outside. "He seemed fine to me all night. Once the game started, he was nice and relaxed. Like he had been preparing for this for awhile. "It was good for his first start, he had to pitch. He got into a rhythm. The slider got going late and it was a good pitch where when he got ahead, he was able to find something to put them away." This was the first time Wieters had caught Arrieta in a game since June 20, 2008 when both played for the Frederick Keys.
