An honor for Buck

As he gets ready to manage the Orioles tonight, Buck Showalter has been honored today. It's an honor he may not even know about yet. He's been named the manager on the New York Penn League's All-Time team. Showalter managed the Oneonta Yankees in 1985 and 1986. His '85 team went 55-23 in the short-season league and beat Auburn for the league title. A year later, his club went 59-18 and lost to Newark in the semi-finals. So his record was 114-41 (.735) in his first two seasons as a manager in the pro ranks. Showalter also managed two years in the Florida State League and one season in the Eastern League for five years total as a minor league skipper. The New York-Penn League, established in 1939, is celebrating its 72nd consecutive season with the naming of the team. The players, selected by an online fan ballot, represent more than 70 years of baseball greats. Here is the team. Right-handed Starters: Curt Schilling, Elmira Pioneers, 1986 Dwight Gooden, Little Falls Mets, 1982 Left-handed Starters: Randy Johnson, Jamestown Expos, 1985 Andy Pettitte, Oneonta Yankees, 1991 Relief Pitchers: Billy Wagner, Auburn Astros, 1993 Jonathan Papelbon, Lowell Spinners, 2003 Catcher: Jorge Posada, Oneonta Yankees, 1991 First Base: Don Mattingly, Oneonta Yankees, 1979 Second Base: Pete Rose, Geneva Redlegs, 1960 Shortstop: Robin Yount, Newark Co-Pilots, 1973 Third Base: Wade Boggs, Elmira Pioneers, 1976 Outfield: Kenny Lofton, Auburn Astros, 1988-1989 Jim Rice, Williamsport Red Sox, 1971 Bernie Williams, Oneonta Yankees, 1987 The New York-Penn League represents the first professional stop in the careers of many players.
