Angels break scoreless tie to beat O's 1-0 in 13 innings

Someone finally scored. norris-pitching-white-sidebar.jpgUsually something good happens to the Orioles when the game reaches extra innings, but tonight the Los Angeles Angels broke the long, grueling scoreless tie and beat the Birds 1-0 in 13 innings. Albert Pujols, who had been robbed of hits twice tonight by Manny Machado, lined an RBI single to center to break the 0-0 tie in the 13th inning. Kole Calhoun led off the inning with a walk off Ryan Webb, and Mike Trout's single sent him to third. Pujols knocked in his 67th run of the year. The Orioles were shut out for the eighth time and held to five hits, all singles. They left the bases loaded in the last of the 12th. The Orioles seven-game win streak in extra innings ends as they fall to 12-4 on the year in extras. The Orioles were looking to complete their first home three-game sweep of the Angels since Aug. 3-5, 2010. This was the Orioles' sixth straight one-run game; they are 4-2 in the stretch. Pitching on the one-year anniversary of his trade to the Orioles, Bud Norris pitched seven scoreless innings tonight. Norris once again pitched well against the Angels. In six career starts against them, he has an ERA of 0.43, allowing just two earned runs over 41 2/3 innings. Norris has allowed one or fewer earned runs in five of his last seven starts, pitching to an ERA of 2.55 in those games. Angels starter Tyler Skaggs didn't allow a hit tonight, but he also didn't make it out of the fifth inning. After throwing one pitch to Caleb Joseph with two outs and one on, he called for the trainer and left the game with left forearm tightness. He fanned seven in 4 2/3 innings. The Orioles fall to 60-47, and their American League East lead was cut to 1 1/2 games over Toronto who won tonight. The Orioles fall to 28-24 at home, losing for just the second time in seven games. The Seattle Mariners come to town for a weekend series that starts Friday night when Wei-Yin Chen (11-3, 3.92 ERA) pitches against lefty Roenis Elias (8-8, 4.31 ERA).
