Arrieta does it again as O's top Giants, 4-1

So can Jake Arrieta pitch more often than once every five days? Probably not. Jake-Arrieta-White-Pitching-Squinting-Tall.jpg But the 24-year-old rookie right-hander is now 2-0, 2.77 after two Major League starts. Pitching vs. a Giants team that had won four in a row and had scored 10 runs the night before, Arrieta gave up just three hits and one run over seven innings and one batter on Tuesday night. He walked two, fanned three and threw 95 pitches. Here is a pretty remarkable stat. O's starting pitchers have just two wins over the last 19 games and they are the two starts by Arrieta. Just like vs. the Yankees, he looked composed at the start and retired the side in order in the first. He gave up a Pablo Sandoval homer in the third inning and that was the only hit he allowed over the first five innings. He did this vs. a Giants team that had scored six runs or more in nine of their last 16 games. David Hernandez pitched the ninth to get his second save. One of his fastballs registered 99 on the radar gun. Adam Jones hit a solo homer, Miguel Tejada had three hits and Ty Wigginton drove in a pair for the Orioles. The Birds ended a four-game losing streak and a nine-game road losing streak. They can win the series in San Fran if they can win Wednesday afternoon vs. Tim Lincecum. O's pitching: Previous two games: allow 21 runs on 27 hits. Tonight vs. SF: allow one run on three hits. O's starting pitching: Previous two games: 7 1/3 IP, 14ER, 17H, 4 HR. Tonight vs. Giants: 7 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1 HR. Hitting notes from the win: *Nick Markakis had two doubles Tuesday. Over his last eight games, he has five multi-hit contests and is 11 for 31 (.355) with seven doubles and three RBI. *Adam Jones hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, it was his 8th homer of the year and his 3rd in the last 12 games. Jones has hit safely in nine of his last ten games, batting .342 (13 for 38) with two homers and 8 RBI. *Corey Patterson had two hits and is 10 for 25 (.400) during a six-game batting streak with six runs and four stolen bases. He has four multi-hit games in that stretch, raising his average from .233 to .270. *Miguel Tejada is batting .364 (12 for 33) over his past eight games. *Ty Wigginton had 2 RBI in the victory. It's his first multi-RBI game since May 22 at Washington. *The Orioles are just 2 for 19 with runners in scoring position in this series. *Matt Wieters homered Monday and Adam Jones on Tuesday, giving the O's homers in back-to-back games for the first time since May 25 and 26.
