Chris Davis drives in three runs as O's beat Blue Jays

TORONTO - Chris Davis produced his first multi-RBI game since May 10 and Dylan Bundy allowed just one run for the first time since May 17 as the Orioles beat Toronto 4-1 on Friday night at Rogers Centre.

The Orioles, who went 0-10 at Toronto last year, are 3-1 at Rogers Centre in 2019. They won their second in a row and for the fourth time in seven games in improving to 26-61. The Orioles can end a run of losing 11 straight road series if they win one of the next two games this weekend.

Bundy took a 2-0 lead to the last of the seventh and was pitching a two-hitter. But he gave up a two-out solo homer to Brandon Drury and it was a 2-1 game and manager Brandon Hyde went to his bullpen. Three relievers got the final seven outs to preserve the win.

Bundy allowed just the one run and three hits over 6 2/3 innings and improved to 4-10 with an ERA of 4.65, throwing 96 pitches. He had allowed nine runs over 9 1/3 innings in his previous two starts, but slowed a hot-hitting Toronto team tonight. The Blue Jays were averaging 6.4 runs over their past 22 games.

"He's been pitching really well, especially the first five innings of the game," said Hyde. "His pitch count was so low tonight. He was really efficient. He just made one mistake there. But I thought he was fantastic."

Davis, who homered Tuesday at Tampa Bay, hit another homer tonight, his seventh. He connected on an 0-1 fastball from Aaron Sanchez in the second for a 1-0 lead as he drove the pitch 405 feet. After two walks, Jonathan Villar's single to left gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead.

The lead remained 2-0 until the homer by Drury but then the Orioles put up two big insurance runs in the ninth. Chance Sisco led off with a single and Renato Núñez drew a walk. Then Anthony Santander dropped a sac bunt, putting two in scoring position. Davis singled to center to cash in those runners for a three-RBI night and a 4-1 lead.

From May 11-July 3, Davis went 30 games and 105 plate appearances with a total of three RBIs and he matched that tonight. Davis' 40 career homers and 98 RBIs against Toronto are his most versus any opponent and his 20 career homers at Rogers Centre are his most at any road ballpark.

"It's always good to come through when your team needs you," said Davis. "Especially against a division opponent going into the break. We talked about it before the game started. We want to try and build some momentum going into the break. Finish up on a positive. Dylan threw the ball outstanding, picked up the entire team and this is a good win for us."

"I think he's just feeling good at the plate," Hyde said of Davis. "He got some pitches to hit. I like when I see C.D. ready to hit from the first pitch. He goes through spurts where he gets caught in between and maybe starts guessing a little bit. But I like when he's on time with the fastball from the first pitch of the at-bat."

The Orioles' struggling bullpen came up big tonight. Richard Bleier got three outs and Miguel Castro retired Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a fly to left to hold what was then a one-run lead in the eighth. Paul Fry pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record a save.

After the game manager Brandon Hyde said Mychal Givens is sore after his dive to get an out at home plate on Wednesday and he was unavailable tonight. He expects to be able to use him in the rest of this series.

The Orioles optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Lucas to Triple-A Norfolk following the game.
