Frustration in Kansas City

Whenever you lose by one run, you can often point to a lot of things that went wrong. Tuesday night in Kansas City, a lot of things went wrong. Brad Bergesen pitched a scoreless first, but got rocked during a three-run second. He can't seem to find any consistency right now. Derrek Lee made a baserunning blunder. In the fourth he hit a bloop single to right. But, with the Orioles behind 3-0, he tried to stretch that into a double on right fielder Jeff Francoeur and he was thrown out. Lee knows all about Francoeur from the National League, but tried to take the extra base anyway. Twice in the game, an O's pitcher issued a leadoff walk and twice that walk came in to score. Billy Butler walked and scored versus Bergesen in the second. In the 10th, Alex Gordon drew the leadoff walk from Jason Berken and came around with the winning run two batters later as Kansas City got the 6-5 walk-off win. Cesar Izturis, starting at second base with Brian Roberts out after root canal surgery, made an error in the fifth and that run also came in to score. Jeremy Accardo came in out of the bullpen and yielded a leadoff homer to Francoeur in the sixth to tie the game 5-5 right after the O's had gained their first lead at 5-4 with a two-run top of sixth. Every mistake the O's made bit them tonight. As for the hitters, Nick Markakis went 0-for-5 to snap his three-game hitting streak and he is now 12-for-70 at bat for an average of .171 in that stretch. Mark Reynolds went hitless and has just five hits over his last 53 at-bats for an average of .094. Reynolds' average on the year is down to .168. It was a long night and a frustrating one for the Orioles who lost in more than three hours and 10 innings. They fall to 13-15 on the year and 3-2 on this road trip with Jake Arrieta (3-1, 5.01) facing Kyle Davies (1-3, 7.98) on Wednesday night in Kansas City.
