Futures Game O's, the Friday farm and a very noteworthy win

It must be pretty exciting for the organization that the two Orioles pitching prospects to make the All-Star Futures Game are among the youngest players on either the American League or National League rosters. The rosters for the game on July 7 in Cleveland were announced Friday.

Single-A Delmarva right-hander Grayson Rodriguez makes the roster at age 19 and Single-A Frederick lefty DL Hall joins him on the AL roster at 20. There are six players among the 50 players on both rosters that are 19 years old and there are 12 at age 20. One player, Tampa Bay Rays infield prospect Wander Franco, is age 18.

Rodriguez is the only player from the South Atlantic League to make the game and is one of just two players in low Single-A ball along with Arizona outfielder Alek Thomas.

Rodriguez is 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 0.86 WHIP for Delmarva and was the Orioles' Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April, going 3-0 with an ERA of 0.54. Hall is 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA for Frederick.

Hall was taken No. 21 overall in 2017 and Rodriguez No. 11 overall last year. This was the first time in the history of the draft, which dates to 1965, that the Orioles took prep pitchers with back-to-back No. 1 picks. Now they'll both represent the club in Cleveland next month.

On the farm Friday night: Triple-A Norfolk lost a doubleheader to Charlotte. The first game was the completion of a suspended game from May 5. So Sisco and Anthony Santander are in that box score even though they played for the Orioles last night. In the Game 2 loss by 4-3, Mountcastle hit a two-run homer, No. 14. Right-hander Dan Straily starts for Norfolk tonight.

Double-A Bowie is tied for first in the second half Eastern League race at 8-2. Bowie beat Akron 3-2 for its 19th win in the last 24 games. Rylan Bannon hit his fifth homer and first since May 2. Ryan McKenna was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and Jesmuel Valentin had an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Winning pitcher Bruce Zimmermann gave up two runs over six innings and is 3-2 with a 2.75 ERA. Cristian Alvarado got the last four outs to record his first save since the 2014 season.

Single-A Frederick lost to Wilmington 6-1 to fall to 33-45 on the year and to 4-5 in the second half. Zach Jarrett went 2-for-4 for the Keys and is batting .306. Right-hander David Lebron gave up three hits and three runs over 5 1/3 to fall to 2-3 with an ERA of 3.88.

Single-A Delmarva is in first-place again in the second-half race in the South Atlantic League. The Shorebirds went 48-21 in winning the first half and they now lead their division again at 8-1. Right-hander Hector Guance got the win Friday 5-3 at Hagerstown. He allowed three runs in five innings and Felix Bautista got his first save. Seamus Curran was 3-for-4 with a homer (No. 12) and three RBIs and Adam Hall had two hits and is batting .323 for Delmarva.

Right-hander Adam Stauffer pitched short-season Single-A Aberdeen past Tri-City 3-0. Drafted in round 19 in 2017, Stauffer gave up just two hits with six strikeouts in seven strong innings. He is 2-1 with a 1.65 ERA for the IronBirds, who are 6-8.

The rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles are 4-0 after beating the Pirates 5-3.

Noteworthy win: The Orioles' 13-0 romp over Cleveland last night was certainly unexpected. The Orioles began the night 4-19 in June while Cleveland was 16-7 this month, best record in June in the AL and tied for second-best in the majors. The Orioles had lost seven straight at home and were 1-13 the previous 14 games.

But surprise, they posted their biggest shutout blowout since a 15-0 win over Toronto on Aug. 19, 2006. The win by 13 runs was their biggest win margin since May 13, 2018 in a 17-1 win over Tampa Bay.

And here is a stunning stat: The Orioles scored four runs in the first and second innings. Per STATS, LLC., it is the first time the O's have scored four or more in each of the first two innings since Aug. 26, 1979 at Comiskey Park versus the White Sox in Game 1 of a twinbill.
