Jones undergoes elbow surgery (plus lineup and notes)

BOSTON – Infielder Jahmai Jones underwent Tommy John surgery today on his right elbow and is done playing for the 2022 season.

Jones, 24, was batting .212/.339/.343 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs and seven RBIs in 27 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

The Orioles acquired Jones from the Angels on Feb. 2, 2021 for starter Alex Cobb. He returned to the majors on Aug. 24, appeared in 26 games and went 10-for-67 (.149).

Dr. Timothy Kremcheck performed the surgery in Cincinnati.

The Orioles begin a five-game series tonight at Fenway Park with Kyle Bradish facing the team that provided the opposition for his major league debut.

Bradish allowed two earned runs and three total over six innings on April 29. Christian Arroyo hit a two-run homer.

In his last two starts, Bradish has surrendered nine runs and 13 hits in 9 2/3 innings to leave his ERA at 5.74.

Adley Rutschman is catching and batting fifth. Anthony Santander is in left field and Austin Hays is in right.

Jorge Mateo is playing shortstop and trying to break a 2-for-29 slump in his last eight games.

Tonight’s game airs exclusively on Apple TV+.

Grayson Rodriguez is starting tonight at Norfolk, and the Orioles will keep providing bumps in his pitch count.

Garrett Whitlock has a 3.58 ERA and 1.163 WHIP in 10 games this season, including six starts. He’s struck out 40 batters in 32 2/3 innings.

Whitlock hasn’t exceeded five innings this season. He allowed five runs and 10 hits in three innings in his most recent outing against Seattle.

The right-hander’s first two major league games in 2021 came in relief against the Orioles, and he tossed a combined 5 1/3 scoreless innings with no walks and eight strikeouts. The Orioles saw him in six games and managed only one run with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings out of the bullpen.

Trevor Story has hit seven home runs in his last seven games, and eight in his last 10. He’s totaled 21 RBIs in his last seven games and 32 this month.

The Red Sox have won eight of their last 10 games and escaped last place in the American League East. The Orioles took two of three at Camden Yards.
