Mahoney and Diaz move to Double-A (w-Gomez quotes)

After today's afternoon game in Frederick, the Orioles promoted Keys first baseman Joe Mahoney and closer Jose Diaz to Double-A Bowie. Mahoney, in 72 games, is batting .299-9-49 with 18 doubles and an OPS of .823. He is batting .341 with runners in scoring position. The 26-year-old Diaz is 3-0, 1.69 and went 12 for 12 in save chances for the Keys. Over 26 2/3 innings he walked nine and fanned 33 and allowed a batting average against of just .216. Even though Robbie Widlansky and Joel Guzman have been playing first base at Bowie, they both can also play the outfield and Mahoney is expected to get the bulk of the starts at first for the Baysox. Josh Dowdy is 14 for 14 in saves at Delmarva and might be a candidate to move to Frederick at some point, but it appears he is likely to stay at Delmarva for now. "They deserve it. They worked very hard, they put up some good numbers and they deserve to go to Bowie," Keys manager Orlando Gomez said of Mahoney and Diaz after today's game. Corresponding moves to replace the players at Frederick and any other moves this would create through the farm system are not expected until tomorrow. "I've still got (Jacob) Julius who can play first and pitching-wise, I've still got some guys with plenty of rest," Gomez said. Thanks to Josh Land of the Carroll County Times for sending along the quotes with the Keys skipper.
