Mariners win 6-5 as O's drop second straight series

The O's have hit their first speed bump on Buck Showalter's watch. After starting 8-1 for their new manager, they have now lost five of the last seven after falling 6-5 to Seattle Wednesday night in the series finale. Jeremy-Guthrie_White-Pitching-Tall.gif The O's got the possible tie run to second in the last of the ninth, but David Aardsma retired Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis to end the game as Seattle took the series victory. Jeremy Guthrie's run of six straight quality starts ended as he gave up six runs (five earned) and eight hits over eight innings. He falls to 7-12, 3.97. In his previous six starts, Guthrie's ERA was 1.52. Luke Scott's two-run single gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead in the first, but Matt Tuiasosopo, who hit a three-run homer in his last at bat last night, hit a three-run shot in first time up tonight. His blast off Jeremy Guthrie in the second gave Seattle a 3-2 lead. Seattle scored twice in the fifth for a three-run edge, but Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer in the seventh to cut that back to a run. It was Wieters 10th homer of the year and just his second over the last 18 games. Casey Kotchman added an RBI double in the eighth for a 6-4 lead. The O's got that run back when Scott doubled and later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth. Wieters made a bid to tie the game with a man on second and two outs, but Tuiasosopo made a diving catch to rob him of a game-tying hit. Right-hander David Pauley, who pitched for the O's Triple-A team at Norfolk last year, got the win in his 12th career big league start, giving up four runs and five hits over six innings. The O's won their first three series with Showalter, but have now lost the last two and are 10-6 since he took over on August 3rd. In game one of a four-game series with Texas on Thursday night, it's Brian Matusz (4-12, 5.28) vs. Colby Lewis (9-9, 3.28).
