Marlins get to Gonzalez, take early advantage (Nats win 6-2)

The Marlins greeted Miami native Gio Gonzalez rudely in the second inning. gonzalez-gio-grey-swing-sidebar.jpgJeff Baker singled to lead off the frame. Reed Johnson, who is replacing the injured Giancarlo Stanton, then smacked a double that bounced off the center field wall and the Marlins led 1-0. Gonzalez managed to get the next three outs to end the rally. Brad Hand has not allowed a hit in the first two innings. He has an 8.03 ERA in six starts versus the Nationals. Update: Anthony Rendon notched a base hit with one out in the fourth to break up Hand's no-hit bid, if you can call it that. After a stole base by Rendon, Wilson Ramos jacked a double that bounced off the right-center field wall. The hit scored Rendon to tie the game at 1-1. Ian Desmond followed with a clean single to right field that scored Ramos and the Nationals led 2-1. Bryce Harper singled Desmond to third. Asdrubal Cabrera's single scored Desmond to make it 3-1. Kevin Frandsen singled to score Harper, then came around on a throwing error by Johnson, and extend the Nationals lead to 5-1. The Nationals tallied six hits in the inning, five of them with two outs. Update II: The Nationals may not hit a home run tonight in cavernous Marlins Park, but they are doing everything else. In the fifth, Jayson Werth launched a long double to deep center field right in front of the 418 foot marker, scoring Rendon and the Nationals lead 6-1. Update III: Baker added a run-scoring single for the Marlins in the sixth and the Nationals lead 6-2. Update IV: Gonzalez went seven innings, allowed only six hits, two runs, both earned, no walks and struck out five. He tossed 96 pitches, 66 for strikes. It is his sixth straight quality start. Update V: Rafael Soriano came on and pitched a perfect ninth to secure a 6-2 win over the Marlins. With the win, the Nats improve to 88-64, while Gonzalez's record is now 9-10 on the season.
