Mullins, Zimmermann return to Orioles

The Orioles reinstated center fielder Cedric Mullins from the injured list this afternoon. They also recalled left-hander Bruce Zimmermann and optioned reliever Logan Gillaspie and infielder Josh Lester to Triple-A Norfolk.

Mullins finished his rehab assignment with Norfolk after Thursday’s doubleheader and returned to Baltimore. He’s leading off today.

First baseman Ryan Mountcastle stayed with the Tides last night. He isn’t included to today’s transactions.

Lester tossed a scoreless ninth inning last night in his professional pitching debut and reached on an error in the bottom half.

Ryan O’Hearn is playing first base again and batting cleanup. Gunnar Henderson is the shortstop. Aaron Hicks moves to right fielid.

Austin Hays, who leads the American League with a .323 average, has recorded a hit in eight of the last nine games since June 13 and 14 of the last 16 games since June 4.

Dean Kremer is 8-3 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.407 WHIP in 15 starts. He’s allowed five runs in 16 innings in his three career starts against the Mariners.

The Orioles allowed a season-high 13 runs last night and tied their high in giving up 17 hits. They’re 17-8 in series openers.

Ryan McKenna is 5-for-10 as a pinch-hitter this season. The five hits, including last night’s infield single in the ninth inning, are tied for second in the majors.

Mariners rookie right-hander Bryce Miller is 5-3 with a 3.68 ERA and 0.877 WHIP in nine starts and has allowed one run or fewer in six. He’s walked only eight batters and surrendered four home runs in 51 1/3 innings.

Right-handed hitters are batting .191/.219/.313 against Miller, and left-handers are batting .206/.266/.370.

Teoscar Hernández has reached base in 16 of 18 games in June while slashing .353/.413/.647 with three doubles, five home runs,15 RBIs and 12 runs.

Last night’s 12-run winning margin was Seattle’s largest since a 14-1 victory against the Astros on June 5, 2019.
