O's minor league notes from around the organization (updated)

Here are a few notes from around the Orioles minor leagues, including a quick look at the Orioles' two teams in the Dominican Summer League.

NORFOLK

Right-hander Yovani Gallardo makes his third minor league rehab start tonight, pitching for the Triple-A Tides at Charlotte. Gallardo is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in his first two starts, pitching once for Single-A Frederick and once for the Tides. He is expected to rejoin the Orioles rotation on Saturday. Gallardo threw 85 pitches for Norfolk last Tuesday and will probably have a similar pitch count tonight.

Catcher Audry Perez has hit .340 with four home runs and 23 RBIs in 41 games and he's just 10 plate appearances shy of qualifying among the International League leaders, where his .340 average would lead the league. Outfielder Mike Yastrzemski enters play tonight with 17 extra-base hits in 26 games with the Tides, as he's racked up 11 doubles, two triples and four home runs.

Right-handed reliever Oliver Drake has not allowed an earned run over his last 10 appearances, as he's held IL batters to a .167 average (6-for-36) with 15 strikeouts and one walk over that 10-innings span.

BOWIE

Outfielder Glynn Davis extended his hitting streak to six games Sunday, batting .364/.391/.636 (8-for-22) with three doubles, a home run, four runs scored, and six RBIs. Catcher Austin Wynns has hit safely in four straight games (.400/.412/.600) going 6-for-15 with three doubles, seven runs scored, and five RBIs during that stretch.

FREDERICK

Keys pitchers have not allowed an earned run over their last three games and 23 innings. They pitched a shutout in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday at Potomac, in a pair of seven-inning games. The Keys won 4-3 on Sunday, allowing three unearned runs. The Keys' 3.79 team ERA ranks fourth in the Carolina League.

Outfielder Conor Bierfeldt went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored yesterday. He is batting .368/.435/.842 (7-for-19) with three home runs, six runs scored, and 10 RBIs in his last six contests. Third baseman Jomar Reyes registered a season-high tying three hits and is batting .326/.354/.391 (15-for-46) in 13 games during June after hitting .183 in May.

DELMARVA

Right-hander Cristian Alvarado earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings, walking one and striking out eight. He ranks second in the South Atlantic League and first among O's farmhands with 74 strikeouts. Catcher Alex Murphy went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Murphy ranks tied for first in the South Atlantic League with 11 home runs. Shortstop Ryan Mountcastle has hit safely in six of his last seven games, batting .469/.528/.813 (15-for-32) with four walks, five doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored, and five RBIs in that stretch. Mountcastle is 6-for-10 his past three games and batting .340 this month.

Updated: Mountcastle today was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday. He appeared in all seven of the Shorebirds' games in the past week, where he hit .469 (15-for-32) with two home runs, five doubles, five RBIs and seven runs scored. He helped Delmarva go 5-2 during the week.

He started the week off with his finest performance Monday in West Virginia, where he went 5-for-6 with a home run. He would go on to register multiple hits on Tuesday (3-for-8), Friday (2-for-3) and Saturday (3-for-4).

A native of Oviedo, FL, Mountcastle overcame a slow start and has hit bat rolling right now. He's hit .360 (40-for-111) in 30 games between May and June to raise his average to .285.

The Orioles' highest-level teams have losing records with Norfolk at 21-43 and Bowie at 27-36. Their Single-A teams have winning records with Delmarva at 35-26 and Frederick at 32-31.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE

The Orioles' two teams in the Dominican Summer League have both gotten off to 2-5 starts. For the O's DSL-1 entry, first baseman-outfielder Rachid Engerhardt, 20 from Curacao, is 5-for-11 (.455). Outfielder Jorge Gil is batting .261 with five RBIs. Pitcher Tomas Leoncio has thrown 8 1/3 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts over two starts.

For the O's DSL-2 entry, left fielder Johnny Dixon, 19 from Panama, is batting .375 (12-for-32) with two homers and nine RBIs. He had driven in at least one run in each of the team's seven games.

The Orioles short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds affiliate begins a new season in the New York-Penn League this Friday at Hudson Valley. Luis Pujols will manage the IronBirds. The rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles, managed by Orlando Gomez, opens a new season June 24 hosting the GCL Rays.
