Orioles beat Toronto 1-0 to end regular season at 96-66 (O's to play Tigers in ALDS)

The Orioles used a Jonathan Schoop home run and a six-pitcher six-hitter to beat Toronto 1-0 today in their regular season finale. The Orioles finished with a 96-66 record (.593) and they snapped a three-game losing streak. Now they look ahead to Thursday's Game 1 of the American League Division Series. Jonathan-Schoop-bat.jpgThe Orioles took the lead in the top of the fifth on Schoop's first home run since Sept. 4. Schoop got an 85 mph fastball on a 3-2 pitch from R.A. Dickey and hit it out to left for his 16th homer. Schoop hit three homers in three games against Cincinnati from Sept. 2-4, but had not homered since and began today in a 5-for-52 slump. Meanwhile, Miguel Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings today before Ubaldo Jimenez came on in the last of the sixth. Gonzalez gave up five hits with no walks and two strikeouts, throwing 62 pitches. Gonzalez improves to 10-9 with an ERA of 3.23 and gives the O's four starters with 10 wins or more for the first time since 1997 when Mike Mussina, Jimmy Key, Scott Erickson and Scott Kamieniecki did it. He was followed to the mound by Jimenez, Andrew Miller, Tommy Hunter, Darren O'Day and Zach Britton. Britton got the final three outs for his 37th save in 41 chances. This was the Orioles' 13th shutout. Over his last six starts, Gonzalez has pitched to an ERA of 1.62. In 12 starts this year against the AL East, he went 5-2 with an ERA of 2.78. Both teams struggled to get clutch hits today as the Orioles went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and Toronto went 0-for-8 as well. This was the fifth 1-0 game of the season for the Orioles. They lost three of the five, also winning Aug. 3 against Seattle. As they head toward the playoffs now, the Orioles finished 46-35 on the road, 11-8 versus Toronto, 47-29 against the AL East and 17-10 in September. Update: The Tigers beat Minnesota 3-0 this afternoon to win the AL Central, so Detroit will be the Orioles' opponent in the AL Division Series. Detroit will come to Baltimore for Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday. It is a best-of-five series where the Orioles will host the first two games and Game 5 if necessary. No game times have been announced.
