Orioles DFA López and recall Zimmermann (Rutschman back in lineup)

Ineligible for the postseason and unable to recapture his All-Star form from last summer, reliever Jorge López was designated for assignment this afternoon and replaced by left-hander Bruce Zimmermann.

The Orioles recalled Zimmermann from the Norfolk Tides, who are in Las Vegas for tonight's Triple-A championship game against Oklahoma City. The Baltimore native hasn’t pitched in the majors since making his sixth relief appearance on July 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Zimmermann allowed seven earned runs and eight total with 15 hits in 11 1/3 innings with the Orioles and posted a 4.42 ERA and 1.545 WHIP in 21 starts with Norfolk over 99 2/3 innings.

The last two outings in the regular season were rough, with Zimmermann surrendering a combined 14 runs and 24 hits in 9 1/3 innings. He started Game 1 of the best-of-three series against Durham in the International League championship and allowed one run in two innings.

The Orioles haven’t announced a Sunday starter. Kyle Bradish would be working on his normal turn but could be rested, with Zimmermann a candidate to replace him.

López was selected off waivers from the Marlins on Sept. 2, returning to the organization that traded him to the Twins at the 2022 deadline. He tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings last night in a 3-0 loss to the Red Sox but had a 5.25 ERA in 12 games.

The right-hander was under team control in 2024 with another year of arbitration eligibility. He didn’t qualify for the playoff roster because he arrived after Aug. 31.

The Orioles will try again tonight to win their 101st game, their highest total since finishing 102-57 and going to the World Series in 1979.

Kyle Gibson starts the penultimate game of the regular season and seeks his 16th win and 18th quality start. His only appearance against Boston this season came on Opening Day, when he allowed four runs in five innings.

Rafael Devers is 6-for-15 with two doubles lifetime against Gibson. Trevor Story is 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple.

Right-hander Kutter Crawford has registered a 4.23 ERA and 1.151 WHIP in 30 games (22 starts), and he’s struck out 128 batters over 123 1/3 innings.

Crawford has made only two career appearances against the Orioles, including one start, and gotten crushed. He’s allowed 11 runs and 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings, including four home runs.

The game airs exclusively on FOX at 7:15 p.m.

TNorfolk’s Jackson Holliday was selected as the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year, and Chayce McDermott is Pitcher of the Year. Tides manager Buck Britton won the Player Development Award. Dave Jennings is Scout of the Year.

Holliday, McDermott and Britton can’t be honored tonight at Camden Yards because they’re in Las Vegas.
