Robles homers, Rendon and Kendrick connect (Nats win 5-1)

The Nationals have been hoping for a quick start against the Mets tonight after watching New York score four runs to begin Tuesday night's opener.

They got that in this second game of the series. Adam Eaton walked against Mets starter Wilmer Font. Victor Robles singled. Anthony Rendon brought Eaton home with a run-scoring double. A Juan Soto groundout to shortstop scored Robles. Howie Kendrick's single to center scored Rendon.

Left-hander Patrick Corbin struck out the first three batters he faced. But New York got on the board in the third, thanks to an RBI double courtesy of J.D. Davis.

Mid-third, the Nats led 3-1 over the Mets.

The Nats quickly got that run back with a solo homer to left-center by Robles. That was his eighth of the season. Rendon doubled again. Kendrick added another RBI with a double off the wall in right-center. That was it for Font. Nats have 6 hits in three innings.

After three innings, the Nats lead the Mets 5-1.

Update: Corbin has pitched six innings and has allowed only one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Font lasted only 2 1/3 innings, surrendering five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He threw 63 pitches, 38 for strikes.

Rendon is 3-fpr-3 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI.

After six innings, the Nats lead the Mets 5-1.

Update II: Corbin finished eight innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and a season-high-matching 11 strikeouts. He threw 108 pitches, 72 for strikes.

Sean Doolittle came on in the ninth and struck out Robinson Canó looking. Pete Alonso struck out swinging. Michael Conforto flew out to left field to end the game.

The Nats beat the Mets 5-1.
