Scherzer allows rare three-run shot (Nats win 6-5)

Surprisingly, the Phillies were able to score quickly against Nationals starter Max Scherzer.

After recording an out to open the game, Scherzer walked Logan Morrison. Jean Segura followed with a single to third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Yan Gomes got the Nats on the board in the bottom of the third with a no-doubt solo shot to deep left field off Phillies starter Aaron Nola. For Gomes, it was his sixth homer in his last 18 games and 12th on the season.

One batter later, Trea Turner cranked a double and Adam Eaton walked. But Rendon flew out to center field and Juan Soto struck out on a foul tip.

After three innings, the Phillies lead the Nats 3-1.

Update: Miller added his second homer of the game off of Scherzer to lead off the fourth inning. The blast came on a 1-1 pitch and was hit over the right-center field wall.

The Nats quickly got that run back in the bottom of the fourth. Following singles from Asdrúbal Cabrera and Matt Adams, Victor Robles was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gomes then hit a line drive to deep right field. The sacrifice fly scored Cabrera from third base.

After four innings, the Phillies lead the Nats 4-2.

Update II: With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Trea Turner blasted a grand slam off of Phillies reliever Jared Hughes. His 18th homer of the season came on an 0-1 count and was his second career grand slam. His first grand slam was July 5, 2018 off of Adam Conley versus Miami. The Nats have their first lead of the game.

After six innings, the Nats lead the Phillies 6-4.

Update III: Bryce Harper hit a homer off Hunter Strickland on the seventh. Daniel Hudson worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his seventh save.

Final score: Nats 6, Phillies 5.
