Series finale postponed, makeup scheduled for June 8

The Nationals' series finale against the Orioles has been postponed after a day and evening filled with rain - and not enough reason to believe it would end early enough to get the game in at a reasonable hour.

Nats-Park-Tarp-Sidebar.jpgThe game will be made up June 8 at 7:05 p.m., one of only two common off-days the clubs had the rest of the season.

One of those off-days is Monday, though a makeup that day would have required the Orioles to fly back to Washington in the middle of a road trip to Kansas City and Detroit.

The June 8 date comes after the Nationals complete a three-city West Coast trip that wraps up the previous afternoon in Los Angeles.

Though the outlook looked poor most of the day, there was a glimmer of hope in the early evening, with an apparent break in precipitation. But the rain picked up again, and officials apparently weren't convinced there would be enough of a window to get the game in.

A.J. Cole was scheduled to start for the Nationals, but they elected to skip over their No. 5 starter and proceed as planned this weekend with Tanner Roark, Gio Gonzalez and Max Scherzer facing the Phillies.

With relievers Shawn Kelley and Koda Glover on track to be activated from the disabled list Friday, the Nationals could elect to demote Cole (along with another pitcher) to Triple-A Syracuse and move Jacob Turner back into the rotation.
