The Orioles' GCL and DSL team rosters (Bowie's All-Stars)

TORONTO - With a team featuring 10 selections from the just concluded 2017 First-Year Player Draft, the Orioles' team in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League began its season this week.

ed smith stadium.jpgThe GCL Orioles play their home games at the club's Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota, Fla. The team will play 30 home games running through Sept. 1. The games are open to the public at no cost. Parking is free and located in the East Lot at the corner of 12th Street and Tuttle Avenue. Game times and location are subject to change without notice. Gulf Coast League games are just part of the Orioles' year-round activities in Sarasota. In addition to Spring Training, Extended Spring Training, Gulf Coast League and Fall Instructional League, the Orioles host numerous amateur tournaments, games, and clinics in Sarasota County, as well as a variety of community activities and cultural events throughout the year.

A look at the current roster listing 2017 draft picks:

Pitchers: Layne Bruner, Jose Diaz, Juan Echevarria, Gray Fenter, Tomas Leoncio, Lazaro Leyva, Yeizer Marrugo, Luis Perez, Yelin Rodriguez, Victor Romero, Gillian Wernet.

Catchers: Bryndan Arredondo (round 23), Alfredo Gonzalez, Jose Lizarraga, Jose Montanez (round 21), Fabian Vizcaino.

Infielders: Carlos Baez, Tyler Coolbaugh (round 36), Nick Dibenedetto, J.C. Escarra (round 15), Jaime Estrada, Max Hogan (round 32), Alexis Torres, Willy Yahn (round 25).

Outfielders: Jacob Brown (round 18), Will Robertson (round 30), Lamar Sparks (round 5), Davis Tavarez, Robbie Thorburn (round 31), Guiyuan Xu.

Carlos Tosca is the GCL Orioles manager with Milt May serving as hitting coach and Wilson Alvarez the pitching coach.

In Tosca, the Orioles have a veteran, well-respected skipper leading some of their youngest talent. In his first year in the Orioles organization, he served the last six seasons as Atlanta Braves bench coach. He has served 18 seasons on major league coaching staffs, including three seasons (1998-2000) as Buck Showalter's bench coach in Arizona.

Showalter noted Tosca got his first win in yesterday's 13-8 victory.

"You think anybody has that type of guy managing in the the Gulf Coast League in baseball," Showalter said during his Tuesday pregame media session. "That is a huge coup for us. He is so good at that level, I've seen him work there. He was my bench in Arizona and he is really good."

Yahn is 5-for-9 in those first two games, Baez is 4-for-9 and Arredondo is 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

The Orioles' Rookie-level Dominican Summer League team is well underway in its season, one that began June 3 club. The club has a 9-12 record, going 6-4 in the last 10 games.

The team features a roster that includes players from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Panama and Guatemala. The Orioles play in the Boca Chica division with teams from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. The season began on June 3 and runs through Aug. 26.

The Orioles Dominican academy is run by directors Nelson Norman and Felipe Alou Rojas. Elvis Morel is the manager of the DSL squad.

Some of the players to keep an eye on include Rodriguez who is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in four starts. Also Mendez who has hit .243 through 12 games, Edidson Rojas who is batting .222, Barcenas batting .269 and Jimenez who is hitting .220.

Bowie's All-Stars: Double-A Bowie will send five players to the Eastern League All-Star game. They are Baysox pitchers Tanner Scott and Lucas Long, first baseman Aderlin Rodriguez, middle infielder Adrian Marin and infielder/outfielder Garabez Rosa.

Scott, who has been making three-inning starts all year, has an ERA of 1.40 in 15 games. Over 45 innings, he has allowed 26 hits with 29 walks and 57 strikeouts. Long is 5-3 with a 2.01 ERA over 19 games, including four starts.

Rodriguez is batting .305/.356/.476 with 12 homers and 46 RBIs. Marin is batting .300/.341/.381 with 14 doubles, three triples and 22 RBIs. Rosa is batting .320/.341/.456 with nine homers and 56 RBIs.

The Eastern League All-Star game is set for July 12 in Manchester, N.H.
