Today's Orioles draft picks

The third and final day of the First-Year Player Draft is here. All teams have picks today starting in Round 11 and going through the 40th and last round. So far of the Orioles' 11 picks, they have selected six high school players and five from college. They have taken a total of eight pitchers and catchers and one first baseman, third baseman and outfielder. Among some later round picks that worked out pretty well: Albert Pujols and Jim Thome in round 13, Don Mattingly in round 19, John Smoltz in round 22, Mark Buehrle in round 38 and Mike Piazza in round 62, a round that doesn't exist anymore. Round 11 (No. 339): The Orioles selected LHP Steven Brault from Regis University. This season, he went 8-2 with an ERA of 2.63 for Division II Regis. Over 79 innings, he walked 18 and fanned 103 and his fastball sits in the 88-90 mph range. Round 12 (No. 369): The O's took RHP Jacob Bray from Feather River (Calif.) College. He was a relief pitcher and third baseman for the junior college this season. He moved from Jacksonville State to Feather River for the 2013 season. Reports indicate he has a low-90s fastball that can reach the mid 90s. Round 13 (No. 399): The O's select RHP Jimmy Yacabonis, a junior from St. Joe's University. He is a 6-foot-3, 205 pounder who was 1-2 with a 2.02 ERA and 10 saves this season. Round 14 (No. 429): The O's selected a player with a famous name here, taking Vanderbilt outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl. He was a senior this year and some projected he would be drafed higher than this, perhaps in rounds six through 10. After posting some modest stats there his first three seasons, the younger Yaz hit .402 this year in 26 SEC games. Round 15 (No. 459): O's select shortstop Tyler Walsh from Mater Dei High in Indiana. In a draft considered somewhat light on middle infielders, this is the first second baseman or shorstop the O's have taken. Round 16 (No. 489): O's select 1B Randolph Gassaway, a right-handed hitter from Riverwood International Charter School in Georgia. Round 17 (No. 519): O's went back to the college ranks for junior RHP Caleb Kellogg from the University of Tampa. Round 18 (No. 549): The Orioles took junior RHP Reed Reilly from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He redshirted in 2011 making him a junior academically, but he is a draft-eligible sophomore for this draft. He was a closer for Cal Poly with a mid-90s fastball. Round 19 (No. 579): O's select RHP Dylan Rheault from Central Michigan University. This draft-eligible sophomore is listed at 6-foot-9 and weighs 245 pounds. Round 20 (No. 609): In this round, the Orioles selected a fourth straight college RHP, taking senior Nick Cunningham from the University of Arizona. Round 21 (No. 639): O's take 1B Levi Scott, a right-handed hitter from Howard (Texas) Junior College. Round 22 (No. 669): O's take University of Tampa RHP Jon Keller and yes, they took his teammate in Round 17. Keller began his college career before transferring here, where he led Tampa to the Division II College World Series. He started and won the national championship game. His fastball sits in the low-90s. Round 23 (No. 699): O's take TCU junior RHP Stefan Crichton. Round 24 (No. 729): O's selected senior SS Jared Breen from Belmont University. Round 25 (No. 759): O's take LHP Daniel Ayers out of Columbus North (Ind.) High School. Baseball America ranked Ayers No. 177 nationally and reported that he could get taken in the top five rounds, but he falls here. Maybe it has to do with dollar demands or his college commitment to Western Michigan. His fastball touched 94 this season. A solid curve gives him two potential plus pitches. The publication also reported that "he was operating more at 87-90 mph and struggled to throw his curveball for strikes as the draft approached." In an e-mail exchange tonight, I asked Baseball America's Jim Callis why he feels Ayers dropped. "Signability is almost certainly the reason," he wrote. Round 26 (No. 789): O's took LHP Layne Bruner from Montesano (Wash.) High School. He has a Washington State commitment. Round 27 (No. 819): The Orioles selected junior LHP Donnie Hart from Texas State University. Round 28 (No. 849): The Orioles took RHP Robert Tyler from Crisp County (Ga.) High School. Reports indicate he has the potential for three average to above average pitches including a fastball that has reached 94 mph. Round 29 (No. 879): Here the O's selected OF Conor Bierfeldt of Western Connecticut State University. Round 30 (No. 909): The O's took junior SS Federico Castagnini of Creighton. Through 30 rounds (and 31 picks), the O's have drafted 19 from the college ranks and 12 from high school. They have taken 17 pitchers (11 RHP, 6 LHP) along with four catchers, three first baseman, three shortstops, one third baseman and three outfielders. Round 31 (No. 939): The O's selected 6-foot-6 prep RHP Dustin Hagy from Trinity Christian Academy in Florida. Round 32 (No. 969): The O's took LHP Max Homick from the University of San Diego, the same school that produced Brian Matusz. He was a draft eligible sophomore. Round 33 (No. 999): The Orioles get Radford University fifth-year senior SS Jeff Kemp, a Bowie, Md., native that played at Baltimore's Archbishop Spaulding High School. Round 34 (No. 1,029): Here the O's select RHP Parker Bugg from Rancho Bernardo (Ga.) High School. Round 35 (No. 1,059): The O's took OF D.J. McKnight, a lefty batter from Madison County (Fla.) High School. Round 36 (No. 1,089): The O's took senior LHP Eric Green from Embry-Riddle University. Round 37 (No. 1,119): The O's selected senior SS Justin Viele from Santa Clara University, their fifth shortstop taken in this draft. Round 38 (No. 1,149): The O's drafted OF Conor Harber from Western Nevada Community College. Round 39 (No. 1,179): O's take senior LHP Augey Bill out of the University of Arizona. Bill is 6-foot-9 and weighs 225 pounds. Round 40 (No. 1,209): The O's wrapped up the draft taking junior RHP Garret Cortright from Canisius College. Some final notes: * The O's drafted 41 players over 40 rounds. * They took 27 from college, 14 from high school. * The drafted 10 LHPs and 13 RHPs. * The O's drafted four catchers, three first basemen, five shortstops, one third baseman and five outfielders. * Of the 23 pitchers they drafted, 16 stand 6-foot-3 or taller with two at 6-foot-9. Certainly we'll have more stories of signings and more on these players with scouting director Gary Rajsich over the next few days and weeks, but that wraps up 40 rounds of drafting over three days.
