Wondering about Worley and tonight's lineup

ARLINGTON, Texas - In the Orioles' continued pursuit of a deep start from their rotation, they're turning tonight to right-hander Vance Worley.

Next man up.

Worley lasted 4 2/3 innings in his debut against the Rays. He kept them scoreless through the third, surrendered a bases-empty home run to Corey Dickerson in the fourth and managed only two outs in the fifth.

A catcher's interference call on Matt Wieters extended the inning and former Oriole Steve Pearce followed with an RBI single.

Worley has made one career start against the Rangers back on April 25, 2013 and allowed two runs and six hits over five innings. He threw 102 pitches.

The current Rangers are 10-for-31 against Worley. Prince Fielder is 4-for-9 with a double and home run, and Ian Desmond is 3-for-14 with two home runs.

Worley's last win as a starter came on April 22, 2015 with the Pirates. He's never pitched at Globe Life Park.

Martin Perez has allowed five runs and nine hits and walked nine batters over 12 1/3 innings in his first two starts this season. He's 2-1 with a 4.34 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles, with only two walks and 13 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings.

The current Orioles are 17-for-57 (.298) against Perez. Mark Trumbo is 4-for-9 with a double and home run, Manny Machado is 3-for-9 with a home run, and J.J. Hardy and Wieters are 3-for-6 with a double.

Adam Jones runs gray.pngChris Davis is 1-for-8 with a double and four strikeouts, and Adam Jones is 1-for-9.

The Orioles are seeing the second of three left-handers in this four-game series. Does Pedro Alvarez remain out of the lineup, putting Trumbo in the designated hitter spot and keeping Joey Rickard and Nolan Reimold in the outfield corners?

The assumption here is Jones stays in center field after returning to the lineup last night. Manager Buck Showalter will check on Jones again this afternoon.

Otherwise, Showalter could use Wieters as the DH, put Caleb Joseph behind the plate, start Trumbo in the outfield and choose between Rickard and Reimold.

Rickard has a hit in eight of nine games and has reached base in all of them. He collected an RBI double last night, but also struck out twice, popped up and grounded out. He has three hits in his last 18 at-bats.

It's a game of adjustments for the Rule 5 pick. Pitchers are getting a book on him and he has to adapt.

Rickard pulled a pitch from Cole Hamels last night for his double, reaching the left field wall to break a scoreless tie in the third inning.

"These aggressive pitchers, they know what they have," Rickard said. "They have good stuff. They're going to come right after you. You've just got to match their intensity and aggressiveness, and I put a good swing on it.

"These guys are good. They see things, they see every pitch, every swing. They know what they're doing. They have a plan and you've got to have one, as well."
