Orioles claim reliever Scott McGough off waivers

The Orioles have claimed right-handed reliever Scott McGough off waivers from the Marlins and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

With the move, the Orioles have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

The Marlins designated McGough, 26, for assignment yesterday to make room for Eric Jokisch, who was claimed the previous day.

McGough made his major league debut last season, appearing in six games with the Marlins and allowing seven runs and 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He posted a 2.12 ERA in 13 appearances with Triple-A New Orleans and a 2.70 ERA in 10 appearances at Double-A Jacksonville.

McGough has made only one start among his 143 minor league appearances, going 10-17 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.289 WHIP in five seasons. He was 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in two games with New Orleans this year before the Marlins designated him.

"McGough is a good competitor and should be able to support our major league bullpen if needed this year," said executive vice president Dan Duquette.

The Dodgers selected McGough in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Oregon.
